Absolutely! Will take time to show results, but another vote in favor of openness.

They've been saying this for a while, actually.  They were getting asked for support for some feature (I wanna say AIGLX?) in their drivers, and they said that they were about to do a rewrite of their Linux drivers, and were going to open source them, so wasting development time adding that feature to their current drivers didn't make much sense.

Well, seems it's official:

AMD briefed Linux.com this morning on a pending announcement regarding the open sourcing of drivers for ATI graphics cards. It's official -- AMD will make code and specifications for ATI graphics cards available on the Internet on September 10.

That would suddenly make new ATI cards more interesting than Nvidia if I were going to buy a new video card / system.

Now it seems there won't even be a NDA. Just keeps getting better...

This morning at the X Developer Summit in the United Kingdom, Matthew Tippett and John Bridgman of AMD have announced that they will be releasing their ATI GPU specifications without any Non-Disclosure Agreements needed by the developers! In other words, their GPU specifications will be given to developers in the open. Therefore you shouldn't need to worry about another R200 incident taking place. The 2D specifications will be released very soon and the 3D ones will follow shortly. Specifications for ATI's R300 GPUs should also be out in the future. You may recall that we explained their new open-source strategy last week, but at that time it was still up in the air internally whether or not there would be an NDA for developers. Well, there won't be now so developers can freely access this information and use it for open-source work.

How old are you looking for?  Joe's last link mentioned specs being released for the R300, which is the Radeon 9000 series.  Are you wanting more info for your Rage Pro?  ???

We might speculate >  it's more a tentative attempt to break the strangle-hold of WinTell/AtI marketing dominance

However, Releasing of  source  code - doesn't necessarily translate into
full range of enhanced extentions being implemented for porting to Linux

Time will tell - (don't hold breath - it will be long wait)
"Older cards" - no need to go back to Rage series -
what about the zillions of Radeon chipsets, starting from 7000E series !
OEM as well as 3rd party 'generic' > The  equivalents of Nvid's MX geforce series

32MB GPU mem is sufficient for most less demanding MM tasks

Hard-core gamers - would not use Linux anyway
(Shoot_em_up on-line competitions,  Game selection) ?

And here are the first specs released without NDA: http://www.x.org/docs/AMD/

Ok, so by now I'm willing to start believing they are serious about this...

Not only is AMD providing the open-source community with their ATI GPU specifications, but they have also been partnering with Novell on the development of a new open-source display driver. We've been telling you about AMD's open-source work all month, and today the new driver is finally available for download. It is still very much a work in progress and isn't much further along than the open-source R500 Avivo driver. However, this new driver does support the Radeon HD 2000 (R600) family. This new X.Org driver is called RadeonHD
