Hello all -

My machine is a 600Mhz PIII currently running with 256MB RAM and a Riva TNT2 Model 64 video card.

I recently replaced my SOHO 5.0 installation which seemed to run OK with a fresh installation of SOHO 5.8.  I did not of course anticipate any major problems...  Roll Eyes

Well at this point the foremost primary problem is that the machine freezes up almost immediately after I execute startx from a user account.  To be honest I have not tried to startx as root - what I've read in some other Linux forums suggests that running X as root is something of a no-no.

As I searched the forums looking for something relevant the only thing which caught my attention was hanumizzle's comment on another thread suggesting that DDC probing might freeze the system (http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=3063.msg18829#msg18829 )... Could that be my problem?  If so, can I fix or avoid that problem somehow?

Am I perhaps missing any clues in this Xorg.0.log file?

here are a few things to try
startx as root
change nvidia to vesa in driver section of xorg.conf
change nvidia to nv in driver section of xorg.conf

let us know if any of that works, and we can go from there

Did you also begin /home from scratch or was it carried over (not re-formatted) from your old 5.0 SOHO installation?  I wondering if perhaps you're trying to start X from a user account that was created under 5.0 SOHO which, because of KDE configuration settings, could be causing some sort of conflict.  If this is the case then you should be able to test the theory by creating a new user and then starting X.  The new user should be created with a default 5.8 SOHO skel home directory structure that should definitely be compatible with KDE.  Just an idea!

Hmmm ... I had not considered that some old files may be left over from the old installation.  I installed 5.8 SOHO right over the top of the two partitions in which the old 5.0 SOHO installation sat.  If I recall correctly I had the installer format the partitions prior to installing 5.8 SOHO. For what it is worth the earliest timestamp I see on any files in my current ~/.kde directory in the newer 5.8 SOHO installation is Jul 7 2007 which actually is the date that I performed the installation ...

After some further experimentation I am beginning to think that the X server freezes may have something to do with the acx100 driver for the wireless adapter that I am using.  I have noticed that if I start the wireless adapter as follows BEFORE running startx from a user account then the X server freezes up shortly after startup as I describe.

But if I startx FIRST before starting the wireless connection then the X-server seems to run OK for several hours before freezing up (I suspect that I may also have some kind of CPU cooling problem).

I have also noticed that KDE does not start if I try to execute 'startkde' rather than 'startx' either as root or as a user.

Does anything above suggest that I may need to adjust some settings somewhere...?  Maybe I need to check permissions on some files that X uses...?  Are there any other logs I can check for clues?

In my experience as a computer tech. freezing problems are rarely OS/software related. Most tend to be hardware problems: 1) bad RAM, 2) failing hard drive, 3) overheating CPU, 4) failing power supply ---in that order.

I would run a Linux Live CD for a while - any one will do and see if you experience freezing. If you do it is a 95% certainty you have hardware problems. Then I would start with "memtest", then HD diagnostics, then check CPU temps and PS voltages.

Hello,

I had a similar problem with standard 5.8.
The way I've fixed it was:
* root in console mode
* slapt-get --update
* slapt-get --upgrade
* slapt-get --install kernel-src-<version>
* Install NVIDIA latest driver from their site (it'll compile)
* Reboot

I may be way off base here, but I just had the same problem. As soon as x started i'd get a black screen and the system would hang.  My problem was that my hostname could not be resolved. I added it to the line for loopback in my etc hosts file and x started to work again.

Since you see the problem in association with wireless setup, it's very likely that X is unhappy because it can't relate it's host name (your machine name) and an IP address.   

If you were running a graphical xdm sort of login rather than doing startx manually, you'd likely see a gripe message warning of 'Can't find host name, May not be able to continue' or some warning language to that effect.

X needs to see the following entries in /etc/hosts:

# For loopbacking.
127.0.0.1 localhost

And something along these lines:

127.0.0.1   Hitachi-70.tigerden.net   Hitachi-70

or for a static (non-DHCP address) IP

<IP number>   <FQDN>   <hostname>

where FQDN is the fully qualified domain name, and hostname is the short alias name of the machine.

Also, be sure the machine *always* sets up a loopback route (use 'route' to see):

loopback        *               255.0.0.0       U     0      0        0 lo

Since X can map it's display to entirely different machines over the network, it tends to get quite unhappy if it can't figure out interface/IP relationships, and that include the purely internal loopback interface to the 'lo' localhost interface.

The fact that your machine sometimes works for a while after wireless is started may relate to DHCP lease refreshing.   Having hard numbers/names in /etc/hosts keeps the local host's internal loopback routing consistent.
