This is just a few 'tools' to be used with their otherwise closed-source virtualization system, correct?  Any reason to use this instead of VirtualBox, where the whole system is open source?

Actually, VirtualBox is quite the opposite now. It is open source, but the equivalent to the "tools" is not.

EDIT: oh, and the "tools" include the better video and network drivers , as well as the shared clipboard, etc. Not sure if the video drivers are part of the open source package yet though.
