I had previously mentioned in an other topic about my overheating problem. Now I somehow managed to install vector soho and had no problems till now. But now whenever I play a media file the cpu usage shoots to 100% (this is from the process viewer Htop).
I installed smplayer also(I know it uses mplayer only), but here also the cpu usage goes to 100%, while the same file using the same smplayer on windows plays with less than 5% cpu.
Now I am really worried about the overheating, although any emergency shutdown hasnt occured till now, I dont want to risk my (so far working)cpu.
Is this normal? or did I screw up somewhere during the install...

( I also tried using cpulimit-1.1, and restricted the process to a low value~30, but the play was jittery )

Before we can help you a bit more info would be useful:

1) what version of VL are you using?
2) what type of media file?
3) show us the output of "top" if possible
4) did you try a different media player such as xine or vlc, and if so do you get the same CPU usage?
5) did you try a different media file of the same type and codec?
6) can you make that media file available to others to test?
7) did you do any mahjor upgrades to VectorLinux?

I am running vectorlinux soho 5.8.

After a few reboots, the cpu usage is not exactly 100% but its pretty high, I tested different files using different players, the usage continuously varies over a large range, and while seeking it is almost at 100%

On xp, all the files except the mkv ran with less than 18% usage with vlc and less than 10% on smplayer, even while seeking.

I didn't understand much in the process viewer, but I think the high cpu usage was due to the total of all the processes , not due to the player alone.

Will switching to vector standard help???, I'm not into pretty graphics and find kde bloated....

A couple of things:

- try shift-k (uppercase K) in htop, to show kernel processes, I don't think your screenshots are showing the real culprit.

- high CPU usage while playing video could be caused by no video hardware acceleration, try glxinfo to check if this is enabled or not.

I shifted to vector standard and boy, you guys weren't kidding about the speed and performance thing   

All the files played with 10~30% cpu usage on xine. But I couldn't start mplayer, when i clicked on the icon, a small clock appeared next to the cursor and nothing happend. Same thing happened with smplayer also.....I want to play on mplayer coz it takes minimal resources, sigh, problems again

It happened to me the first time I installed VL 5.8 std.  I hope for next versions this annoyance will be fixed (checking mplayer should check smb as well)

It happened to me the first time I installed VL 5.8 std.  I hope for next versions this annoyance will be fixed (checking mplayer should check smb as well)
