How to use WindowMaker?
« on: September 19, 2007, 10:49:27 am »

I just install windowmaker-0.92.0-i586-4vl58 from VL repository
but then I do run window maker as WM?
there is startxfce for Xfce and startfluxbox, startfluxbox-desk and startfluxbox-dock for fluxbox, what is the command for windowmaker?

btw, startfluxbox does not work......

EDIT:
found out from google that we can execute windowmaker using command "wmaker" but there is an error

In ~/.xinitrc change last line to exec wmaker. Then type startx on the console.

And what is a TUI login screen?

In ~/.xinitrc change last line to exec wmaker. Then type startx on the console.

And what is a TUI login screen?

I don't want to change my default WM which is xfce...I still want startx to load xfce as default
I install fluxbox ans there is a hint at the TUI login screen saying type startfluxbox or startfluxbox-desk to use fluxbox
and after I install windowmaker there is no hint showing at the TUI login screen

btw, TUI = Text UI  ::) ::) ::)

Here's what I end up doing for each different window manager I install (it's all done as root):

root:# cp /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc_example /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.wmaker
root:# mcedit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.wmaker
change last line to 'exec wmaker'; save and close file
root:# mcedit /usr/bin/startwmaker
copy/paste green text below :
#!/bin/sh
exec xinit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.wmaker

save and close file
root:# ldconfig - for good measure ;D
root:# exit
user:# startwmaker

Hope this helps.

On your TUI ;-) type:

startx /usr/bin/wmaker

works for me.
