I followed along and found bashrc both in root and in etc/skel/. Should I delete one of them?
No. the one in /root/ is for roots settings, the one in /etc/skel/ is used as a template when you create a new user. You should also have one in your users home dir ( ~/ ). Modify that one. Note that for instance "mcedit ~/.bashrc" will edit the .bashrc in the current users home dir, so you should do that as the normal user, not root. Unless you want to change it in roots settings of course.
