I may be incorrect, but you might want to comment the following as well:
ChipSet     "ati"
ChipId      0x4c49
ChipRev     0xdc

to

#ChipSet     "ati"
#ChipId      0x4c49
#ChipRev     0xdc

Hata_ph

It is all up to your wishes  - but changing to the generic vesa driver may not allow higher resolutions
It depends on the monitor Mfr's pre-set vesa timing  modes

Example- I have an CRT Viewsonic capable of 1600x1200
Using the vesa standards, the highest usable modeline (Resolution) is 1280x1024@75Mhz
~ & as correctly reported by EDID probe of monitor

Even when alternate modelines exist in CFG, they are not switchable (capped at monitor's vesa rates)

Switching from 'vesa' to "ati" driver in xorg.conf ~  gave full 1600x12000 @ monitor capability of 65Mhz

Plse consult your monitor specs then decide
When using  proprietary module drivers (Ati/Nvidia) & (on-board or built-in) vid chipset
they can drive your monitor to  full capability, (better colour depth, refresh rates) ~

Also, there is a xorg.conf-vesa included in the install ;-)

Code: [Select]
mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf-default ; mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf-vesa /etc/X11/xorg.conf ; startx
