How can I use my regular keyboard to write cyrillic letters? I can look at Russian stuff over the web just fine, but I can't figure out how to write in Russian myself. Can I create a shortcut which would allow me to switch between latin characters and cyrillic on the fly? I'm stuck with copy & paste from Character Map: there must be a quicker way!
I'm using Standard VL 5.8 with xfce.

Have the following in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru" EndSection
Note: I *think* it's "ru" for Russian. Restart your X (CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE). Then click on the panel, "Add new item" and select "Keyboard Layout Switcher" (if you're using XFCE, don't know about KDE). HTH. -- Miki

"us,ru(phonetic)" if you preffer phonetic keyboard layout (like me)..
there is another way around it, by making a launcher that changes them with commands..but this ones best

In /etc/X11/xorg.conf change For use CAPS Lock for switch Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru(winkeys)" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:caps_toggle,grp_led:caps" EndSection
or this - Ctrl+Shift Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Keyboard0" Driver "kbd" Option "XkbLayout" "us,ru(winkeys)" Option "XkbOptions" "grp:ctrl_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll" EndSection

I did tryed and it works!!! Now I have 2 keymaps! It the event to celebrate.
I think it will be useful to add this tweak to HowTos... If nobody is against it, I will do it:-)

if you add the following line to xorg.conf as detailed above, you should be able to switch layouts as you describe. Option "XkbOptions" "grp:alt_shift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"i tried this in vl5.9 and it works in kde + xfce desktop environments. it also works if you press RIGHT shift+alt so it may not be entirely what you are looking for. By the way, there are some other combinations listed in the file: /etc/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst that you might be able to use if deemed appropriate. --paul

boneygamba In my case ONLY the RIGHT alt+shft switches layouts It is supposed that adding "l" will make LEFT alt+shft to work ("grp: lalt_ lshift_toggle,grp_led:scroll"), but not with my keyboard not a biggy indeed, but for me it's more convinient to use left keys

It seems that only the combinations that are listed in that xorg.lst file that i mentioned in my last post are allowed.? i do not know if this is truly the case but it seems to be from my trial and error experiments. i was mildly surprised that the LEFT alt/shift (or shift/alt) combination worked but when i reread the rule description it merely says 'Alt+Shift changes group.'. So i assume that means that both sides should work. Maybe it is your keyboard. i have no other clues except to maybe suggest that you set the keyboard model in xorg.conf(if you have not already done so) to see if that makes a difference. --paul
