astropenguin and planetV
« on: October 15, 2007, 01:22:48 pm »

hey guys... i just got a tablet on my hands and i just wanna excercise it during my free hours... so i had this idea of vector linux, being symbolized as a little silver rocket...
so while sketching such a rocket (and not getting it as i intend to anyways yet), i got this idea for a short colorful comic strip..

-i can make it either as a flash slideshow or as a series of wallpaper files (hi res :P)
here is what i've got this far:

1>astro pengin begins his journey to find alternative power sources (his planet is infected ,and governed by monopolistic and evil creatures, which arent developing it well)

2>During the flight with his rocket he gets dragged by a hypergiant with immence gravity field (tera buntu lol)
but he powers up the engines and gets out of the field.

3>During the hiperjump he sees Planet V from a far..

4> astro peng crashes on planet v and gets out of the rocket

5.he notices that gravity on planet V is very low, thus he feels like a feather. (thus explaining why his rocket survived the crash lightly)

6.during his expedition on planet V, astropengin meets friendly creatures who help him fix his rocket.

7.Astropenguin stays on planet V..

the end

lol,i know its corny, but i think it would be funny...so i think of drawing it for fun.  :P

here is the original sketch..

i think the rockets not good yet. Its not simple and beautiful as i wanted it to be...damn,im putting too much stuff on it again.

note: this is a Work in progress. Im still fixin the star field ::)

and the rocket needs some work on its curves,so it looks like a water pebble... and maybe make it abit more silverish..hmm,its behind too neds some straight lines

come onin, suggestions are welcome... also you are free to edit it,but i will upload the xcf later on...maybe

here is version2 (final?-you tell me)

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2117/1728100824_db9a8dc691_o.png

here is compressed JPG version, for those who know not how to convert.

Idk,i've always associated vl with space. I think thats a source of good graphic ideas.

if there is no interest,im not gonna continue this thematic idea.

i would upload the xcf,but i lost my ssh key .. =( (there has to be an easier way, lol)

Looks very nice too me.
Somehow is the rocket still a little bit one-dimensional, isnt it?

yeah,i think its too focused and overdetailed. I must either darken or blur it abit... or take away some of the details. Come on guys, help me out here  ::)

Actually I like how it is now, it reminds me when I was a child and use to watch Robotech every day. Oh, and it reminds me last night too, I was watching Robotech at some "retro" channel. Damn it, I should just grow up  ::)

I would change the vl legend and the planet, I think you have to compensate the weight of the ship, may be moving a smaller planet and vl legend to the lower left corner, or just blur the planet and center the legend on it, I don't know  :P, just keep the screen balanced.

the rocket is two dimensional as it looks flat... you are right it is not doing any good in the illusion of being 3 dimensional.

rbistolfi> thank you. Actually i am a big sci fi fan myself and i dont think theres anything childish in science fiction. Science fiction represents the view of mankind about the feature, storing all of our ideas and dreams about our lives in the future of our kind. It is not only literature, it holds all our dreams for this world. Most of today's inventions are trully invented in science fiction centuries ago. ;D most of today's science fiction's inventions will be reallity in the future, when science catches up with them. Science fiction is important.

Hy,
thanx for this, nice.
But as engineer I tend to go straight for the practical part and forget about the eggheads babble  ;D
If a girl looks 1-dimensional, theories do not help and corrective action is neccessary.

Cool, blurrymind.  Nice nebula effect.

I came across this while doing some textures for Celestia, and have been meaning to post it here:
http://www.solarvoyager.com/tutorials.asp

Unfortunately it's for photoshop, but I had moderately good luck adapting the gas giant techniques for use with the GIMP.

awesome!!

btw,im working on the next wallpaper  ::) for which im investing time into learning 3d to render more 3d rocket and a better vl logo..

Somebody at the forum said that he or she is working on a 3d vl logo.I am interested in that and willing to join in and help with blender. So,please export the obj or blend file and upload it somewhere.. ;D

the wallpaper doesnt have to be in space.I am aiming for a slightly futuristic design,so there are many ideas in the mix. And it will be light on the eyes, but it is going to be futuristic and maybe have a rocket.

I uploaded the file, it is here.

It will render something like this:

It still needs a lot of work, mostly in the lights. I am using an image from the Open Universe project for the world texture, but my original idea was to use a "metaphoric world", something like a ball of paper or similar, perhaps something like this, but I think that img has a restrictive license. Another ideas was to make a wall, and a "world" on it in a "graffiti style". Or may be a "cubist world".
As you see, I don't know what to do with it  :D, but I don't want a realistic globe.
I made a "glassy" material for the "V". I think it is cool, but still need some work. It will take some color from the blender world color/texture (not the world I made, the blender one), but that has a fix, just look to the material options.
Well, if anyone wants to mail/pm  me with suggestions or to show / share own versions, welcome. I warn you, I am a really noob in this. If the job has a virtue, belongs to Blender, not me.

That looks so cool! I'm gonna have to play around with that stuff. WOW  :o

I was making a VL animated logo awhile ago and lost interest because I found I needed to start over and double the frames to make it more fluid.  Made frame by frame with Gimp *shudder*.  But anyhow I still have the .xcf files.  So if you have a use for a frame with or without the lens glare to put behind that beautiful glass "V",  you are welcome to it.  It's all me, so no copyright worries.  The .xcf files are like 20 times larger than this image  :D
