overview: 5.9 v. 6.0
« on: October 19, 2007, 05:05:59 am »

Could someone give me a brief overview of why we are producing VL 5.9 instead of going to VL 6.0. What are we waiting for in order to produce VL 6.0? Is this VL 5.9 a developmental version, interim between VL 5.8 and 6.0? What will be the difference between VL 5.9 and VL 6.0? Please furnish approximate schedule for respective releases. Thanks

The difference between 5.9 and 6.0 is the VL6.0 release will be using the Window's Vista kernel.  I'm just kidding!  Forgive me, I've had extra coffee this morning.  ;D  It's been mentioned somewhere here on the board why it's being done this way, I just can't remember the details.

As far as a "schedule".  I can't speak for our small number of dev's, but factories worry about schedules.  Craftsmen don't adhere to them.

5.9 is the development version of 6.0, so it will be released as such (as 6.0, I mean) when ready.

That's patently ridiculous: the Windows Vista kernel won't be ready for general use for quite some time.*

VL 5.9? I wonder why we didn't call it VL 6.0 Beta (or RC1).

*...if ever.

Sorry, seems I was working on old intel. 5.9 is now slated to be a full release again.

About the development versioning... Many projects currently prefer (as do I for some time now) the -0.1 version for development, since it makes for easier sorting of isos or packages in a directory listing, as opposed to something like 6.0beta, which will be sorted as a higher version than plain 6.0. I've seen it happen in vasm, for example.
