I'm using VL std live 5.8 and would like to know if there is a way to save my settings to my
hdd when I shut down a session. Can I make a persistent presence without actually installing
VL? I'm a complete noob to linux.

I have not seen that one can save the settings. I did some clicking for that and unless I am totally blind I think there is no way yet.

I think there is a cheatcode you can use, check this thread:

You are looking for something like "changes=/dev/xxx". Try appending that line to your boot options (replace "xxx" with the device of your choice, of course)
