VECTOR STANDARD 5.9-BETA1 released
« on: October 14, 2007, 11:00:36 pm »

The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the availability of the beta-1 release of VectorLinux-5.9. The 5.9 release is a major upgrade from previous releases. This release is based on slackware 12 which introduces Xorg-7.2, glibc-2.5 and the gcc-4.1.2 tool chain. Everything in this release has been rebuilt from the ground up resulting in greater speed and stability. We include Xfce4, jwm, the gimp, firefox, seamonkey, opera, cups, audacious, gqview, popular multimedia plugins, mplayer, vfirewall, scribus and many other programs to maximize the desktop experience. Also new is the addition of cruxports4slack and our very own vpackager for easy installation of source packages. This is a beta release but the RC is soon to follow after initial peer testing.
We want as many people as possible to test this and give us feedback.

Please post bug reports here:

Bare minimum weighs in below one GB. Sweet!  ;D

The thing is fast. Nvidia-legacy installed correctly on my GF2MX400.

Why the reversion to Xorg 7.2 from 7.3? Looks sweet BTW.

Well, 7.3 broke vte and terminal on some graphics cards, for one. I think there were other nvidia and/or nv driver issues too.

Witch kernel is going to use?
I read that the new kernel 2.6.23 implements a new scheduling algoritm called CFS
that can increase or server or desktop environment. It can be tuning by /proc/sys/kernel/sched_granularity_ns,
but i don't know how, cause my english e my linux-kernel kwnoledge are miserable.
It can be a good idea to tune the kernl to optimize the desktop environment.

Kudo's to the dev's!  I like the beta a lot.  And it's very usable in it's infancy.  Pretty awesome considering how few the dev's are.  I've built a fair amount of LFS desktops, so I know firsthand how much is involved in making a user-friendly and productive system for ONE user, and specific hardware.  You guys have the responsibility of makings it ready for the masses, with a unthinkable amount of hardware.  Nice job.

Masta: I like the colors of lilo and the bootsplash.  That color blue looks beautiful with the glow around the Vector globe.  And it compliments the affects you did to the VectorLinux text.  It was mentioned in the bugs/annoyances thread that it resembled the MS "blue screen of death".  The Redmond folks shouldn't be allowed to ruin a perfectly nice color. IMHO  And TUI mode with the "Terminal" cracked me up. I actually tried getting a mouse cursor over the buttons. At first I was puzzled how a X application could be running with a booting system.  You got me!  :D Very clever.

He, he. You're not alone, I did the same thing.  :D

I have installed 5.9 without trouble on my MSI board, including my USB wifi SMCWUSBT-G2 with ndiswrapper. I have tried most applications and found no error.
