mixing repositories

i've just installed VL 5.8. however some packages are old (eg. xorg 6.9,  xfce 4.4.0). is it ok if i mix VL 5.8 repositories with VL 5.9beta2?

Definitely a No-No... Dont even try it... like the_headacher said... IT WILL break your system... I guarantee it ;)

so, how do you suggest to update to newer versions? or, am I stuck with the old ones? since VL is not released on a regular basis (like twice a year), it would be a pain not to take advantage of the latest improvements.

You have an option of compiling them from source yourself.

You can also install the latest Beta release, the latest releases feature the ability to do a system-wide upgrade when new versions or revisions of packages are uploaded.

You can also do what bigpaws said... compile from source... but believe me.... compiling Xorg 7.x is not fun.. trust me
