One of our other members (lagagnon) does something like that too.
I have to make sure that it has a decent word processor (hoping for OpenOffice), email support, modem support, network support, web browser, CD support and can support printing.
Open Office may be a little slow, if it's acceptable depends on what sort of machines they are and how much patience you have

As long as the modem is supported by the kernel there shouldn't be much trouble there. Winmodems on the other hand...
VL can print thanks to cups.
I think VL is a match on all counts (though I may have to download OpenOffice separately).
yes, vl 5.8 standard doesn't come with OOo by default, as it's quite heavy.
