I have a java application that I have used under Windows and that I want to "migrate" to Linux. I have downloaded and (maybe) installed the (Linux version of the) application, but can't seem to get it working. Since it is dependent on Java, I thought I would check that first. Sun's site said that I had version 1.5.0_09 installed, even after I installed 1.6.0. The application says it requires at least version 1.4.2, so perhaps which exact version is installed is not critical.
I don't know how to "start" Java if it is not loaded on boot-up, and I'm also not sure if the application is "linked" properly to the Java. Does it cause confusion if I have more than one java version on my system? Do I have to "register" new programs after I install them?
As you may be able to tell, I am a newbie. I am constantly downloading and installing new software in Windows, and need to be able to do the same eventually with Linux.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
