Hi,

First I must advise that I'm newbie in Linux.

I try to revive an old IBM Thinkpad 600E using Vector Linux. I have installed VL 5.8. Chasing around the forum I have found the information to set the audio card. Now all is working fine except the network.

Vasm don't recognize my CNETCN40B PCMCIA network card.

Here are some screen copy

root:# lspci

Socket 1 Device 0:      [-- no driver --]       (bus ID: 1.0)

When I extract the CN40B the "Socket 1 Device 0:" line disappear so I suppose that my PCMCIA card is detected but I don't know how to install it by hand.

Can you please help me.

Fred,

Can you tell us a little bit more about the network card you're trying to make work with your laptop:

1) The brand name and model that's printed on the card
2) Is it a wired or wireless card

I tried to use Google to find information about your network card with the information you provided, but I got no hits.

Thanks,
John

Do you mean Cnet CN40BC?

Extract? Please explain this better.

The only thing you missed was the output of lsmod. Check the output
before and after you extract the CN40BC card.

Thanks for you answers

First of all I confirm it is a CNET CN40BC pcmcia network card. It is a wired lan card.

Here are the copies of lsmod:

with card in PCMCIA slot:

Bigpaws,

Thanks for clearing that one up. "Cnet CN40BC" yielded quite a few hits with Google, including the fact that it has support in Linux. The module that the original poster will need to load is the pcnet_cs module to support that card.

HTH a bit,
John

With card in in shows the right modules loaded.

This module is the one you want:

pcnet_cs               34736  0

Now try Vasm to see if you can get it configured.

The manual way is netconfig that should get you
going.

I have used netconfig to create a network.
But I still have nothing.
ifconfig reports no eth0 or eth1

here is a dump of a part of /VAR/LOG/MESSAGES

As root try ifconfig eth1 up
then ifconfig
then dhcpcd eth1
then ifconfig eth1 | grep inet (This will test for an ip address)

eth1 since it appears to be what is being called by the kernel.
You can also try this as eth0.

ifconfig eth1 up

returns

Perplexing

How about modprobe pcnet cs

Then try the ifconfig I mentioned before.

modprobe pcnet_cs

returns no error

but the ifconfig returns the same message

I wish I had not corrupted any configuration file during my tries. Perhaps I'll try to reinstall VL to morrow morning.

Thanks a lot for your help

Hi,

Sorry for the delay but I can work on this machine only during week end.

Here is the copy you asked:
fred:$ cat /etc/modprobe.conf
# /etc/modprobe.conf (old location for Linux 2.6+ config)
#
# The use of this config file is deprecated if you are using a
# 2.6.x or newer kernel.  Instead, create files in the
# /etc/modprobe.d/ directory containing modprobe options.
#
# For more information, see "man modprobe.conf".

alias eth1 pcnet_cs

Do you think a complete reinstall from scratch will help?

A reinstall might be the best place to start
since you noted changing config files.

After the reinstall, during the setup use the
network configuration. Then post the lsmod
and then ifconfig -a.

From what I have seen the card is recognized
and the modules are loaded.

Post back so we can get your card working.

Hi,

I have cross tested the network card in another laptop, the card works fine.

I have reinstalled from a fresh formatted hard drive.
During installation the network installation program said that there is no network card.
Here is the copy of lsmod and ifconfig -a:
