Welcome back Tuche.
I'm just curious about what made you come back, and which distros have you tried during this (long) time.
It's always good to have inputs about things people find cool about other distros.
i used to like Vector due its speed. Not sure what happened before, but i know i left Linux due a big data loss i had ( was my mistake, but made inside Linux ). I lost really important files, i was so mad that i deleted everything and went straight to Windows :/.
Anyway, back to Linux on Mai.2007. I used Ubuntu for 1-2 months then moved to Fedora.
Ubuntu i left because it was way too much oriented to Linux starters, but way too much. Without mentioning that it pre-install bunch of crap.
Fedora, i like it, but its speed is poor, and yes i have tweaked here and there, but still not as fast i think it can be.
So i have been searching for a "smaller" Distro, somehow fast/more optimized, not full of things that i will never use and that i will need 5 hours to get rid of everything and not so much oriented to the totally PC and Linux newbie, but to a more experienced folks on PC, but no that all experienced in Linux.
Following this statement, i cut out Gentoo and Arch. I thought about going straight to Slackware, there i would maybe learn the REAL Linux, but its way to handle Packages/Dep/Libs scares me a bit. Then Zenwalk sounded cool, but really cool due its idea about 1 app per task / focus on desktop and multimedia, but still, its way to manage packages/deps/libs may be not so scary as it is in Slackware, but meh.
i love Gnome, but do also like XFCE ( i hate KDE ).
I plan to use it as desktop, mainly EMail ( 3 accounts, total of around 5000 emails off IMAP, so i would need a really stable and nice EMail app, with search/sorting/spelling check/and all the fancy thing you can get, i need some info here, which one should i get ? ), Internet(FIREFOX), Music(EXAILE), Torrent, Chat(MSN/ICQ/GTALK/MIRC)(PIDGIN/XCHAT), i do also have an "All-in-One" Printer (Copy/Print/Scanner - will it work in Vector?), a usb drive / a usb camera and i do also plan on getting Compiz-Fusion ( does it work ok with XFCE ? ). and not forgetting, i dual boot xp ( games ), so, what does Vector use? Grub? Lilo? ( going to check Distrowatch for its packages
So i came to my oldie friend that helped me deleted all these files in the past
i have been thinking about getting the latest 5.9 RC3, how is it doing ?
Can some1 point me the direction on getting more info on how Vector handles packages/deps/libs/etc ?
Do you think Vector will fit me well ?
