Or perhaps, the Homo Sapiens Neanderthalensis, if they belonged to the same species as us...
Which, given the biological basis of language, gives rise to the interesting possibility that they had it. And, I suppose, that the Sapiens Sapiens and the Neanderthals could cross and have fertile descendents.
Which would amount to a big genocide between humans if indeed the Sapiens Sapiens kicked their butts.
I don't have a clue where that research stands these days... it's been quite a few years since I first heard that hypothesis.
