Hello,
First of all, thank you for such a wonderful distribution. Thank you!
Now, i installed 5.9 on my Compaq Evo N630c and everything works perfectly. The thing is that it's a little bit slower than 5.8. For instance, if i'm surfing the internet with Firefox and i'm saving a file there is always like a 2 second freeze. Or if i am using VASM it will also take some time to browse through it.
Any suggestions?
By the way, i really loved it when i could choose the window manager in 5.1 ( i loved IceWM ). I never really understood the move to XFCE.
Thanks.
Gus

You probably should anaylze the output from the following commands, done while you are experiencing the slowness - top : do you have any errant processes using 100% CPU ? free: show us what your RAM usage is df: show is how full your mounted disk drives are By the way, i really loved it when i could choose the window manager in 5.1 ( i loved IceWM ). I never really understood the move to XFCE.
5.9 is provided with fluxbox and jwm as alternate managers, just choose them in the login screen. If you want IceWM I think it is in our repositories. The use of xfce is probably because it is a much easier environment for newbies to deal with than IceWM or fluxbox, and is still highly customizable by geeks. Thanks. Gus [/quote]

I'm not having that problem with firefox. What sort of system do you have? - look at the output of the commands I suggested above, launch firefox from a terminal and see if there are any errors, look at your ~/.xsession-errors file and see if you are getting any errors there.

It's probably Firefox's (and indeed, seemingly all other Gecko browsers') massive bloatedness. The standard semi-fix for that problem with the current crop of Gecko browsers is to enter about:config in the address bar and set browser.cache.memory.enable to false then browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers to 0. However, even that is of limited effectiveness on Firefox and Seamonkey.

This may not be relevant, but I HAVE noticed reduced responsiveness in the browser when using Firefox (as root, through help/upgrade menu option) to upgrade to the latest version. I've been able to resolve the sluggishness but simply upgrading via gslapt; that is now the only way I'll upgrade firefox. FWIW.

The huge amount of files. /usr/bin, for instance, contains 2,455 files on my system.

lagagnon: .xsession-errors shows no errors in Firefox, as far as i can see. I was trying FluxBox, but. . . how do i mount? In Xfce if i want to mount as a user i just modify fstab ( with root ) and mount from the utility in the system tray, but how do i do it in FluxBox?
Thanks.

If i'm going to save a file in a folder with lots of files in it, then it slows down ( . . . have to check closely ). I guess it's a processor speed thing ( 1.4 GHz ). By the way, nice front page! you should give one of the ck-kernels a try, maybe they will give you a boost as well.

Fluxbox does not have that mount widget that xfce does. Consequently, you either have to set /etc/fstab to auto mount the drive at bootup or make sure HAL or vl-hot are running for detachable devices to be recognized. Either that or you have to mount by hand in a terminal, e.g.: #mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/tmp What exactly do you want to mount?

This thread bothers me. I run Vector 5.8 standard on my Omnibook 900b 650 mhz with 256 ram. I use it about 8 hours a day. It is rock solid. I took (according to lagagnon) a sledgehammer to it a couple of months ago and broke the "file open" gadget in Thunar, so I now open files mostly in xfe. I have all the programs loaded for my business and all of them work perfectly. Seamonkey is fast. I have only Vector on my machine (no dual boot) and three partitions [swap (hda1), boot (hda2) and home(hda3)]. Boot has the programs and Home the data.
As I write, I am downloading Vector 5.9 (BitTorrent). No earthly reason why, if you come right down to it, except perhaps, it might be better (hope springs eternal) - and I would probably get a fully functioning Thunar again, which I don't much care about. And I would be using the operating system our club is now giving out to underprivileged kids, so would better be able to explain it to them.
Anyway, I have loaded Vector 5.8 standard on a machine I don't much like (HP Compaq NC6000), with three identical partitions. My plan is to load 5.9 on the NC6000 to make sure I can do it without destroying data on the Home partition and, if so, to then load 5.9 on my Omnbook..
Now, I read that 5.9 might be slower than 5.8.
As I said, this bothers me.
1) Does anyone know if it is likely that 5.9 will run slower on my Omnibook? 2) Will I be able to still get my wonderful but perhaps weird programs (particularly lyx) off of gslapt?
John
