I've actually found 5.9 to be noticibly sluggish, even compared to KDE in 5.8 SOHO.  I found this odd, until I figured out the culprit - seems HAL is quite the resource-hog after all.

Either that, or a month of Puppy and flux has made me very, very spoilt :P

Oops, changing video drivers broke mplayer, i get Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device

If someone knows the answer off the top of their head great.  I will try the mplayer list but I'm sure that if I just use gslapt to remove and reinstall it it will be fine

When I install the propietary ATI drivers on my notebook, I have to set the video out device in mplayer to opengl.

Joe1962 Thank you, that worked.

I brought home an older 32M Nvidia card, installed the proprietary Nvidia drivers and got about the same gain over the vesa driver as the vesa driver got over the intel driver.

I guess the conclusion to this is that the new xorg gains more from a better vid card (or maybe suffers more from a weak vid card).  Since most of the salvage machines I have access to are retired corporate machines they have weak onboard video.

I feel your pain on that brother - ex-corporate are a great, cheap source of machines, but the onboard video usually bites.  I've got one slim box around here that has no CD drive, and would refuse to run anything but vesa, despite the fact that it was only 2 or 3 years old.

They're fun boxes to try different things out on, for sure, but damn can they be a pain at times too.
