Yet another happy user

Hello all,

Just had to share this. Have been a long time Linux user. Made a detour at those exciting times when BeOs came up. And when that was lost, returned to Linux. Tried and used many (Suse, Knoppix, Debian, DSL, Puppy, Xandros, Ubuntu, GobeLinux and Dynebolic). Used Xandros for my production machine for a while. That box is to be converted to a HTPC soon using KnoppMyth.

Had a Dell Latitude C600, Pentium III 750 MHz, 256Mb lying around. Both Puppy and Dynebolic performed well on this box. Except for Wifi, couldn't get my Linksys WPC54G card working. Most likely my fault, but annoying nonetheless. With all the experimenting going on, fell in love with the "less is more" window managers.

And then I stumbled upon VectorLinux 5.9 STD Gold. And somehow it all came together. Had fallen in love with Xfce before, so this turned out to be a perfect match. And wireless working out of the box! Joy all over.

It has been such a pleasure the past week using this "old" machine that is has rapidly become my production machine: blogging, office-apps for my small business, podcasting with audacity, gimp, scribus, watching dvd's, and programming in lua.

It just simply works.

So VectorLinux it will be. (with Puppy and Dynebolic in the back pocket when I have to travel very light or have some very special multimedia task)

Hi Stokstaartje!

Glad you like vl. Devs have done a great job with 5.9, and wifi is one of the killer features in this release (I had some troubles configuring mine in 5.8, but 5.9 catches it out of the box )

Lately I'm packaging some 'less is more' wm and your mention about lua reminded me of ion3 (tiling wm scriptable with lua).   I'll try to package it (along with lua) during this week.

I always enjoy watching meerkat manor ("Stokstaartje" = Dutch for "meerkat") on Animal Planet and BBC, but I hope you don't share their bad temper . Those little critters may look cute when they're all sleepy, but man can they fight when they're angry!

It's extremely hard to go around the web and not run into Dutchies  . Found the mmbd after I had installed Audacity. Still need to check it out. Thanks for the pointer though.

That sounds like me all right! But usually o so mild mannered...

Just as luck would have it, the Dell laptop now has started to come up with the boot error: No boot device... Checked it on the web and it turns out to be a known problem. And now for the solution: Disconnect the machine from the power. Press the power button to further discharge. Connect power again and reboot the machine. And presto, we are up and running again!

Did I mention you have to do all this while standing on one leg, facing east, fingers of left hand crossed and right hand waving the collar bone of an albino rabbit?

Ah! A fellow BeOS fan...

I remember those days so vividly. A very lively and active community. And every release was one big discovery and party. The whole BeOS experience left me wondering what if

• they had shown up a few years earlier?
• they had shown up a few years later?

It all turned out to be too little too late. Lost track of all the open source BeOS efforts after the sell out... Anyway it is not a viable option anymore (for me that is...)

Thank you for the gift. And boy is it tempting. But I have learned the hard way not to start yet another project with so many already running.

Good man - I love Vector, but when I leave home, be it for uni, Dubai or anywhere in between, I always carry a Puppy around my neck.

Also, what little I used of BeOS, I enjoyed.
