I have VL 5.8 Standard on my laptop.  How do I upgrade to SOHO, without having to make a CD. Can I download directly?

It is not really possible to do that upgrade. It really is a distinct distro in itself. If you want  SOHO you will have to burn the image and install it on your system.

What lagagnon says is true - a direct upgrade to SOHO (proper) is highly unlikely.  However, by adding kdebase/kdemeta and some other packages to your standard installation you can acheive SOHO-likeness.
