A true geek dual-boots 2 Linux distros

« on: January 10, 2008, 06:36:29 am »

One thing that has kept me away from Linux until now is a lack of support for my WiFi card.  It's a G-Net NP0560 which uses the Texas Instrument ACX100 chipset.  I had been following the Sourceforge project for ACX1xx cards and when I saw that (K)Ubuntu included it I DL'd the Live CD for Feisty Fawn and tried it. Ubuntu found the card but KNetworkManager would not configure it.  I found that it worked just fine with WLassistant.  I installed from the Live CD and have since upgraded to Gutsy Gibbon.

I decided to take a look at VectorLinux after reading a post about it on Kubuntu Forums.  It was touted as easy to use for noobs and the XFCE desktop was very fast and light.  Since I'm not using my Windoze partition any more and my Brother-in-law swears by Slackware, I thought I'd try dual booting Kubuntu and a second distro.  I downloaded VL5.8-std-LIVE-RC1.iso and burned it with K3b.

It booted up just fine, but it didn't find my WiFi card, just ETH0 (lappy's inrternal Intel E100 chipset).  How do I make it work with VL?

In VL 5.8 Standard, I was able to get my US Robotics 54g wireless pci card working.  It uses the TI ACX111 chipset.

I ended up using ndiswrapper along with the winxp drivers and it worked a charm.  This link is the method I used to get my card working under VL using ndiswrapper (note: the instructions are tailored for bobbear's d-link card; you'd need to make sure you're using the correct drivers): http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=4448.msg29192#msg29192

I hope this helps.  If you have any quesions I'd be glad to help.

Cheers!

I just uploaded a package to the repo it is in testing here: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/veclinux-5.9/testing/drivers/acx-20071003_2.6.22.14-i586-1vl59.tlz
you can download it and install using installpkg acx-20071003_2.6.22.14-i586-1vl59.tlz
or slapt-get --install acx-20071003_2.6.22.14-i586-1vl59.tlz

let me know if it works for you.
Thanks,

I downloaded the package to my EXT3 partition (which the Live CD mounts automatically) and rebooted the Live CD. I opened a terminal, navigated to the folder with the .tlz file, switched to root and ran installpkg acx-20071003_2.6.22.14-i586-1vl59.tlz.

I got FATAL: module acx not found.

Is there any difference between playing with the Live CD and an installed system?  (I ask because I installed wlassistant while running the Kubuntu live CD and was surprised that it worked.)

Also, can you install from the Live CD? If so, how?

I apologize I thought i read that you had the 5.9-LIVE cd.
the package i upoaded is for that.
for 5.8 you will have to use your windows driver and ndiswrapper.

It's currently Beta1, but yes there is one.  Have a look at the 2nd new topic below the download buttons titled "VectorLinux 5.9 live CD beta1 released".  Looks like it was released Dec 31st.

Enjoy!

I had an unused partition on my hard drive (haven't booted XP in months) so I installed 5.9.  In the installation dialogs I chose wireless services at boot.  Then I tried to install the package you linked above.  No joy.  The errors were:

lo      no wireless extensions found
eth0  no wireless extensions found

Plus I nuked my grub boot loader and had to use the Kubuntu Live CD to get back to where I could post this (in Firefox on Kubuntu).

can you post the output of lsmod and dmesg from kubuntu and VL.
I am guessing the firmware is not being loaded in VL, the easiest way to fix it may be to copy the working firmware to VL from kubuntu.

In looking over the output of dmesg I was reminded that Kubuntu got grumpy over the absence of tiacx100c11, but that didn't stop it from working.

Here are the outputs asked for:

I got curious and did some hunting for files.  Kubuntu is loading (and successfully running) the 1.9.8.b drivers.  I found the drivers on the VL partition and did a diff of the VL and Kubuntu firmware directories.

Code:
lars@toshiba:~$ diff /media/hda0/lib/firmware/acx100_1.9.8.b /lib/firmware/2.6.22-14-generic/acx/1.9.8.b

I assume that no output means no differences.

the firmware is not being found.
try moving the acx directory up to /lib/firmware/acx/1.9.8.b
and if that doesnt work move the firmware up until it does Smiley

YOU DA MAN DAWG!!!

I copied the contents of /lib/firmware/acx100_1.9.8.b to /lib/firmware. Upon rebooting I saw something that I hadn't seen before with VL; lights on my WiFi card.  I fired up vasmCC, went to networking and clicked on the chess pawn icon.  I was immediately asked if I would like to set up WLAN0.  Then I went straight to firefox to post this reply.
