So i have just installed vector on a 30gb partition and I like it a lot ... coming from Puppy Linux (still using btw more lightweight...)

got my modem working (fayled to do so in puppy linux)

BUT! IMO there are some drawbacks....

Auto mounting alone IMO is a bad idea... I feel out of control without a gui (I can get by with the CLI if need be) sure I want vector to DETECT my drive but I'll mount it in my own sweet time thank you....

How do you find pakages online without gslapt? I know slakware has a search tool that you can find apps online where is the Vector equivalent

seems to be less native packages (somebody upload fretsonfire already LOL)... I like the idea of cruxports4slack BUT how you do local install i have no idea

found R 2.5 on the repo but R is already up to 2.6.1 patched to 2.7 and it seems Vector lacks a fortran compiler needed for R compilation from source

NO COMPIZ by default ... come on people at least offer it! Its the way of the future!

not being root is a pain sometimes i can't even install an xmms theme without su root LOL Oh well small price to pay....

I agree, but most people seem to prefer it if everything goes wizardy automatized.

Our gcc comes from slackware. You can use Slackware's gcc-g77. Apparently, you know where to look .

If that abomination is the future I'll take the past thank you. I'm glad it's not on the .iso, there's hardly enough room for what's already on it. I'll take useful programs over eye-candy every day.

As far as compiz not being in by default ... I can understand that...

I am getting the hang of teh repo but my my it is a messy system :-) probably due to versioning and such.

useful programs... check out wNOP it is a 130mb ISO(runs as root mind you) with compiz and xfce and some basic apps built in. that leaves over 500mb for what ever you want die bloat die! RAWR!

It is in my plans to include 5.9 and every "living repo", just like linuxpackages.net lets you pick between 11 or 12. It is easy, but I couldn't find the time for it, yet; but will be soon.

Actually, we've been getting a lot of not so positive comments about our repo's lately. Perhaps it's time to rethink it. For me, it's perfectly logical, but apparently for others it's not. Perhaps documenting it properly could help too, though I have to admit I hardly read the available docs, and I suspect neither do most of the other users.
