I think that the following article posted on the Phoronix web site will be of some help in packaging the ATI driver:

If you read both pages of the article, there is a link to the git repository at, which contains packaging scripts for the ATI drivers (you'll want the Slackware stuff). Most of the discussion is about building the stuff on the buntus, but the principles should carry over to Slack/VL.

VL 6.0 SOHO latest alpha on one box, VL 5.9 Lite on the other.

Did the noble and heroic Mihail121 finally solve this problem? I am running VL SOHO 5.8 using the generic Radeon driver and performance is terrible. PPracer is unplayable and my major app blender works lousy too. I know it can be much better because I used to Have Ubuntu on this same machine and the proprietary Radeon driver worked like a charm on the same hardware.

I have downloaded the ati installer and run it, it finishes happily but then when I try to run X it stops and says it can't find fglrx. I must find the right log file and see what's happening. I love the attitude of Vector Linux but it makes you stay on your toes with the occasional package dependency problem and some hardware issues. It must be worth it cause I spend the time fighting and sometimes winning.

The only reason I did not upgrade to Vec5.9 is because the proprietary driver will not work on it. I have however been using the proprietary driver on 5.8. In my case it is better than the open source driver but it could be better.

I to hope Mihail121 is eventually successful.
