High everyone. I recently customized my VL59 STD's bootsplash, kdm login screen and xfce splash screen. I thought I'd share these with everyone. Keep in mind this is my first time doing these kind of things. If things dont go as planned, Im not responsible of the outcome. Report how things went ok if you decide to try.

Starting from bootsplash.

While the silent pic isn't exactly a screenshot, I think it pretty much represents what I made it like. There are boot messages familiar from VL's default bootsplash theme and gradient progress bar where the maccish button is. Tested with 1280x1024, 1024x768 and 800x600 res.

To install the bootsplash theme, download the tarball http://rapidshare.com/files/87673324/VLm-ake.tar.gz.html and execute the following command in the directory where you downloaded the tarball as root.
Code:
mv VLm-ake.tar.gz /etc/bootsplash/themes/ && cd /etc/bootsplash/themes/ && tar -xvzf VLm-ake.tar.gz && VLbsplash-switch
If everything went fine a window should popup asking what theme to use. The rest is easy. When it asks whether to run lilo to update initrd, answer yes. WARNING, this overwrites your existing lilo.conf You can backup your existing lilo conf if you feel like it (:. The lilo config file is in /etc/lilo.conf.

Next up, KDM login screen

Yup its maccish too... =/ Tested in 1280x1024 and 1024x768 resolution.
To install, download the tarball http://rapidshare.com/files/87675518/VL_kdm_m-ake.tar.gz.html
Execute the following command as root in the directory where you downloaded the tarball to.
Code:
mv VL_kdm_m-ake.tar.gz /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/ && cd /usr/share/apps/kdm/themes/ && tar -xvzf VL_kdm_m-ake.tar.gz && VLkdm-theme-switch
Once again a window should popup which theme to use. The VL logo on the left is not made by me, it was made someone in here VL community (I apologize I don't remember the author of it Sad ). The theme is a modified version of DEEP kdm theme http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=39575&forumpage=0&PHPSESSID=cae

Xfce splash screen

Vector on a plate lol.
To install download the tarball http://rapidshare.com/files/87677611/balou.tar.gz.html
After that execute the following command as root in the directory where you downloaded the tarball to
Code:
mv balou.tar.gz /usr/share/themes/Default/ && cd /usr/share/themes/Default/ && rm -R balou && tar -xvzf balou.tar.gz
You can preview it in xfce directly. Menu - Settings - Splash screen settings - balou - test

And an ordinary wallpaper I made just for fun

Thanks Uelsk8s, testers and the rest for helpin!

Amazing stuff M-ake, be careful, we could get used to this Smiley.

I didn't upgrade the desktop yet because of heavy workload, still on Beta 3. You guys should make the betas more unstable Smiley
Can I have VLkdm-theme-switch and VLbsplash-switch from the repos?

Yep, very nice.
It should work on 5.8 as well.

Not sure if it's just my 5.8 Standard install, but VLbsplash-switch and the KDM switch commands don't exist, and KDE is installed in /opt/kde/ (not /usr/share/)...but it's almost as easy to edit /opt/kde/share/config/kdm/kdmrc as using M-ake's commands.

Great work...a dramatic effect for sure.

Cheers,

VLbsplash-switch and the KDM switch commands were added in 5.9 gold so even the betas and RC versions of 5.9 dont have them

M-ake, great themes!

The bootsplash looks great on my system however, I am unable to enjoy the KDM theme as it doesn't work properly on my widescreen monitor. The background is all stretched out (especially noticeable with the globe) and things are very misplaced. If you could make a widescreen version (At least 1680x1050), I will gladly help test it on mine. With VL being used more and more on laptops which have widescreen monitors, and with widescreen monitors becoming the norm, I would strongly suggest making a widescreen version. Like I said, I will help out with it if you need me to. I haven't personally ever created a KDM theme but I will most certainly test anything you make and help with what I can. Thanks!

Echoing exterdad, I love the themes but it is a tad stretched on 1680*1050.  Other than that though, damn does my beast look good now!

It is wonderful work there m-ake. The issue with things being out of place on KDM, can be resolved by using percentage of the item placements in your .xml . The way you have it setup currently is that it is being placed in specific locations, for specific resolution.

Changing to percent (as in x=50%, y=20% .. instead of x=220, y=110), this will allow the objects to be placed in their proper location , regardless of the resolution being used.

Thanks for the comments every1.

I merged some objects with the background image to save some time loading the theme, which was designed for 1280x1024. On widescreen resolution the scaled background appears streched and out of place. I should make a widescreen compatible version some day. (:
