Looks to me like you do...

How are you trying to play a DVD?

Tried a number of ways to play it . put the DVD in the player and launch mplayer  - select DVD and get a message :

"No stream found to handle url dvd://1"

Tried xine too but the mouse bounces all over (something else going on there).

I tried a variety of edits to /etc/fstab  - changing the "#/dev/dvd ......" line to "/dev/hdd" or "/dev/dvd".  and set mount point to "/mnt/dvd". also tried  "/media/dvd". verified that those files exist.  There is a "/dev/hdd" there is not a "/dev/dvd" Did all that as root

Tried this with a DVD movie fron Netflix and with a DVD i got from a gift shop.

it is not a dvd drive.
dmesg saying "ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive" is another way of saying you have an optical drive.
if you look up the model # on google you can see it is a  52x/32x/52 CDRW
