Help me set up my (Barely supported) printer.
« on: July 19, 2008, 03:14:49 pm »

http://www.openprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Lexmark-X2580

I tried it a few weeks ago, Linux finds the printer and even names it Lexmark correctly, I tried to use cups to get it to work, but I don't know what to do.

Hopefully someone will come along and help you.

I was able to get to it using http://www.archive.org, and download the driver, I don't know what to do with it though.

Just get the .ppd file from : http://www.openprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=pbm2l2030&fromprinter=Lexmark-X2580, put it somewherem open your browser, in the address bar type localhost:631, enter CUPS, follow instructions and when asking for driver point it to where you downloaded the above ppd file.

Is that enough, lagagnon?
There seem to be some instructions in that page to copy the pbm2l230 executable to /usr/bin (besides telling cups about the ppd file).

killall -HUP cupsd
/etc/init.d/cups restart
/etc/software/init.d/cups restart

The green commands work, the red don't. =(

Code: [Select]
root:# /etc/init.d/cups restart
bash: /etc/init.d/cups: No such file or directory
vector://etc/init.d
root:# /etc/software/init.d/cups restart
bash: /etc/software/init.d/cups: No such file or directory
vector://etc/init.d
root:#

I think your red lines should read "cupsd" rather than just 'cups'.

Also, I've always found lagagnon's instructions would best when performed as root (i.e. launch a browser from root and perform the set of instructions).

That's "service cups restart" in vector linux. Typing that is enough to restart cups.

But it really is best for you to go to cups through vasmcc (Service > Cups printing) instead of in the console. That will launch the service if needed and take you to the appropriate webpage (that's localhost:631, as lagagnon mentioned).

I uninstalled cups and it seems it decided to delete bash and kde and a whole list of other programs, maybe I should install windows or something. *Ugh* I can't bear to think of me running windows ME again. Are there any other distributions that are light and that might have a better time enabling DRI for me?

Seems good, I'll have to check a few other distributions.

Edit: I decided to install Debian. Hope it works =(

Uninstalling cups might not have been a good idea... There seems to be something wrong in gslapt that wants to uninstall a lot of things for some programs...
You can check what is being uninstalled before you click on ok, though.

It's usually safer to type "removepkg cups", if you really want to uninstall it, and only that package is removed and you can see what's going on.

But why did you uninstall cups? Did you go to vasmcc and open the webpage for cups configuration? Did it not work?

Actually, as a general rule, any time I get frustrated when trying to fix something in linux I always end up breaking something. =P
