I will be building R for the repo, but would need a fortran compiler for that.

From the R FAQ: "Note that you need a FORTRAN compiler or perhaps f2c in addition to a C compiler to build R."

Now, what exactly is the best or fastest or smallest compiler, I have no clue. Anyone willing to compile one of these?
(I remember one in the 5.8 repo, but don't remember what it was).

Thank you!

hows this? http://packages.slackware.it/package.php?q=12.0/gcc-gfortran-4.1.2-i486-1

gcc-gfortran  (fortran  support for GCC)

This package contains those parts of the compiler collection
needed to compile fortran  code.  The base gcc package is also
required.

Its primary base is the ANSI fortran  95 standard, with some
some extensions popularized by the 'f77' and 'f2c' compilers,
other compilers (such as Digital products), and the fortran  90
standard.

I'm sorry; I was also looking for a fortrand compiler and downloaded the file, but I don't know how to install it.

I've tried tar comand and then both of the options presented here: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/run-execute-sh-shell-script/

When I use the "sh file NAME.sh", the output on the screen says that many files couldn't be found.

If I use the other option, "chmod" command runs fine, but ./NAME.sh returns the same output, yet it does some kind of installation because some more files are added to the folder.

EDIT: I have vector linux 6.0 light editin, if that's important...

For installing the gnu fortran compiler in VL6.0 you only need to use the package manager. In a terminal as root you can type:

Code:
slapt-get -i gcc-gfortran

Or find "gcc-gfortran" in Gslapt.
