gucharmap: I only get little squares with letters and numbers in them, no actual symbols. Is that normal?

Both Wolvix and GoblinX have a nice little System app called Device Manager. Not sure what it does, but lists hardware. If hardware is configurable from this app, as the name implies, could be something to include in VL-Light.

HPLIP is an optional package at install time. It needs PyQT

--------------------------------------------
Some programs installed with gslapt:

Catfish: "The required module gobject is missing"

Audacious 1.4.0-i586-1vl59: Dialog box: Unable to load skin. Check that the skin at '(null)' is usable and default skin is properly installed at 'usr/share/audacious/Skins/Default'
.. interestingly, Audacious 1.3.2-i486-1 works fine.

Audacity: Needs JACK, did not pull it in.

Under /install/floppy/ the bare.i file is missing. I found it online, just debating if 1.5Gb hard disk is big enough to install VL Light? It would be on a pentium/133 with 128Mb RAM.

A minimal install will fit under 1.5 GB, but won't leave you much room for additional applications or personal files. If you want to try, un-select the dev package and everything else except JWM, pcmanfm and Dillo. We hope to have the next beta out this week.

Haven't been able to get package manager to work. I only tried on one item -kde multimedia-, I believe the files are downloaded, but not installed. If it matters, the machine is dual boot with 5.9 standard.

SIAG Office (currently in testing, eventually will be in extra) will appeal most to folks who run VL Light or Mini.  It requires the old 75dpi or 100dpi font directories be in place.  Light doesn't install this so the package becomes useless.  I'd like to respectfully request that those font directories be included in VL Light.  Also, the fontfix package I've uploaded (see packagers' board) fixes the problem of fonts being installed but not enabled.  I'd like to see that included as well.

Somehow, after running xmms, if I clicked on the terminal icon on the jwm desktop and got xmms instead.  That was beta one and I've downloaded beta 1.3 today.

It's trying to bring up a character set you don't have installed, so yes, it's normal.  If you choose Latin for your character set it should work properly.  Ditto any other character set you have installed.

There is also an alpha (ver. 1.1) for VL-Mini (Pocket VL) which fits in 1.1GB nicely.

Checking out Mepis AntiX, Brasero is the burning software. AntiX iso is 309 mb.

grafburn is another lightweight possibility.

Bad news: The Bare.i file found was from Slackware11. The installation completed, but at the very end I got:"Failed: Kernel too old." The system rebooted and I was looking at:"No operating system found" message. I'm guessing that's why it did not work. Where could I locate bare.i for Slackware12? Or am I totally off?

Good news I found a 4Gb HD ;)

I like grafburn. It does, however, require installing cdrdao in order to properly copy a CD, as grafburn will inform you when you try to copy.
