Linux is great - but frustrating !!

« on: February 01, 2008, 01:13:15 am »

I just bought Vector Linux 5.9 Deluxe Gold Edition and I don't know how to install the second cd.
I've been looking through the forums and the website and still haven't found out how.
After mounting the CD I try to execute the "install" file  but nothing happens.
 Huh
I hope that somebody can help me solve this.
Thank you

I never used Deluxe edition, so I am not familiar how it should work. I guess that second CD contains packages and you install them manually using gslapt or installpkg. Undecided

Just read Vector documentation about package managment and everything will be perfectly clear to you. Wink

You can add CD2 directories to gslapt using the method mentioned in this thread: http://www.vectorlinux.com/forum2/index.php?topic=5124.0

The thread referenced could use more explicit instructions, but if you understand the concept then you'll have no problems.  Otherwise, you could post a reply in that thread asking for more explicit instructions (with maybe an example).

Good luck!

edit:
installpkg will work but it will not resolve dependencies; gslapt would be a better alternative.

If you have the download edition, you can do what I did:

From a terminal:

Type "su"
Then give your root password.

Then type: mkdir /mnt/isoimage

Then change to the directory where you have the *.iso files you downloaded, for example /mnt/hda1/Vector_Deluxe

Then type:  mount -o loop -t iso9660 VL-5.9-DLX-2.iso /mnt/isoimage

Then type: cd /mnt/isoimage

Then type: ls

Which should give you this:

CHECKSUMS.md5  PACKAGES.TXT       helper.sh*       installall.sh*   slapt-getrc
Data/          deluxeinstall.sh*  install.desktop  makeinfo-slack*
Deluxe/        expertinstall.sh*  install.sh*      makeinfo-slapt*

Then type:  ./install.sh

Which should give you this little puppy:

And then you can proceed to install packages.

I only did this because I was out of blank CDs when I downloaded the Deluxe.

Glad to hear it's working - what was your method?
