Whoa .... I got an eee-PC :D
« on: February 13, 2008, 09:35:27 pm »

Sunday 10 Feb, It was a fine day.
The Asus was launching eee-PC in my town,
and there were only 500 items available !!!

I arrived at 9 O'clock,
the mall should normally opened at 10 o'clock,
and the selling should started  at 12 o'clock.

Damn, the queue was already sooooooo long !!!
Fortunatelly, I still got one, with blue color.
Very cute :D

After some examination,
this baby has Linux Xandros installed.
The easy start menu is very easy to follow.
However, after some examination,
it has the hidden IceWM !!!
After some tweaking, IceWM is active.
Wow, I fell at home immediatelly.

The nostalgy of VL 5.x was in the air ....
I guess, next time  this baby will have Vector Linux in it :)

Hehe, I have a 5.1 install disk safely stored. That was a really good release. I was planning an install in a pentium-s I have around, now vl-light is here... perhaps a dual boot.

You lucky buggers with the Eee's who might be interested in installing VL should look at the Slackware Eee info here:

This baby is HOT.  :o :o :o

Everybody wants to borrow it and try their beloved Linux.
So, since 2 weeks ago, it has being installed with:
- The original Xandros
- UBuntu 7.10
- IGOS Nusantara (a local Indonesian distro, based on Redhat)
- Merah Putih (a local Indonesian distro, based on DSL)
- Zenwalk
- and now .... Dewantara (Indonesian distro, based on Vector Linux).

So far, it runs all of them nicely.
The devices are recognized without hard problem, except the wireless.

Some one at #vectorlinux had this problem. He said eee guys hacked the kernel for the wireless and they didn't release the code yet. I dunno if this is actually the case.

If you follow the second Slackware link (above) you'll see that wireless can work with ndiswrapper.  Not ideal but I wouldn't want a distro without wireless.

I have one too!  Tres cool.   8)

I am impressed with this little linux pc.  It booted right up and went to work.  I did implement the full desktop option (kde) and download udates (went quickly).  I am checking out some of my favorite websites to get familiar with the interface and keyboard (which is small).  It looks like a good buy for me.  I am going to attempt to put vl 5.9 on this pc when I dig up a cdrom player.  That should be fun.

I have an external drive somewhere or another.  Just have to dig it up.  Hmm..

I am getting used to this tiny keyboard faster than I thought I would.

I am really impressed with this version of xandros but will miss my VL if I don't get it on board.  Slack 12 installs on this thin pretty well with minor config changes and the use of NDIS Wrapper for wireless.  I anticipate a similar experience with VL 5.9.

Popped into PC World and had a play on a machine there.... looks remarkably good and even has Tux Racer!  Amazed that it can cope with it but very pleased.  Will have to save the pennies and get one at some point.

Wanna watch Vector move so fast it hurts itself?

Install it on an eeepc.   :o

Full install of VL 5.9 works pretty much out of the box with the exception of ethernet and wireless cards.  Xorg can be configured for 800x480 resolution.  Some small effort is required to get sound operational.

I have yet to get wireless up and running but I know that it can be done on Slackware 12.  The how to is on the eeepc user forum and can be found at http://forum.eeeuser.com/viewtopic.php?id=2640&p=1.  There are some suggestions for wireless in linux found at http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/get-wifi-working-in-different-linux.html.

When I get a moment or two I will give it a go.   ;)

It runs so fast that it compresses light and you have to adjust the screen to compensate for the eerie blue tinge it gives off.

There has been a lot of work done to make slackware 12 fully compatible with the eeepc.  Some of that work will benefit VL users.  Unfortunately that does not include wireless networking (ndiswrapper or madwifi both of which will work in a Slackware 12 install).  NDISWrapper does not work at all (it installs the driver but insists there is no interface), following the instructions for compiling and implementing madwifi leads to frustration.  Wifi Radar shows an active connection, however that connection is actually non existant.  :-\

It may be necessary to install Slackware.  As wonderful as VL is, it is useless on this little laptop without network connectivity.  Has anyone else tried to get wireless going with VL on the eeepc?

dawnsboy,
Can you post the output of lspci for your wireless?
I have the same atheros chipset that is in some of the eeepc's, and i have it working in VL.
Also what version of VL are you using?
