i did not say to tar /home.

if you add compression to the tar it will make it smaller.

When you say "your Home dir", do you mean root Home or user Home. This Home thing is a fine distinction I have never made. Please explain what you mean by "your Home dir", where to locate it, how to transfer it (without the complication of tarring it, if possible). Thanks

a users hoe dir is located in /home/<username>  where <username> is the login name of the user my home dir is /home/uel
if your usb drive isnt formatted with a linux filesystem you need to tar up the files or they will lose their permissions.

I think the 20-gig usb hdd is formatted in reiserfs. But I will take the time to format both drives in Linux, ext3. I looked at the /home/user directory and all the files begin with . (period), except the icon for 'Show Desktop'.

/home/user has 695 items, totalling 29.8 MB.

EDIT: You were right about permissions getting borked.
