rpm2tgz question
« on: March 06, 2008, 05:46:58 pm »

I am having trouble with this program.
 root:# rpm2tgz MFC5440CNlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm
ERROR:  rpm2cpio failed.  (maybe MFC5440CNlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm is not an RPM?)

I am trying to use this to get my printer installed. Thanks, Keith

You will have to find the Program that is not in RPM.. V.L. will not run or install it from and RPM file.

you will need to find it as a .tlz or compile it from source code.

rpm2tgz is intended to be used to convert rpm software packages to tgz (standard Slackware) format.  If the conversion works, some packages at least should work with VL.

kge420:  I don't know what this error message means.  Hopefully somebody more knowledgeable than I am will come along and explain what went wrong.

I've used the tool a few times, with hit and miss success. if you can find the app as source, or tgz your laughing. There is another option I was looking around the net and found you can get this driver as either rpm or deb there's another tool deb2tgz.

http://code.google.com/p/deb2tgz/downloads/list

I'm not sure if you went direct to get your driver but heres where I found it.

My vector box is down or I'd try and get this going for you.  I'm currently working on a server project of my own.

Hope this gives you something to try out.

I used rpm2tgz couple times. Last one was Opera weekly beta. Worked ok, even on x64 Vector

What comes up when you type 'file MFC5440CNlpr-1.0.2-1.i386.rpm'?

The download also may have been corrupted. If you throw one bit out of place for some compression algorithms, the whole process goes down the tubes
