Code:
Hi

After install, X failed to start with "No screens found".

I tracked this down to the Xorg.conf file where the "via" card driver had been selected. My chip is an integrated VGA, from lspci command:

Code:
VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. K8M890 [Chrome9] Integrated Video (rev 11)

I changed xorg.conf and changed the driver to "vesa". All is okay now however clearly I am not using the most suitable driver for my VGA chipset.

On ubuntu I got this working using the openchrome drivers from an ubuntu site with a script that worked for ubuntu (deb).

Is there something on VL that will work with this chip? Any ideas please?

hi keratos
I have the same video card as you
I use the openchrome driver that i compiled. if the package that i made didnt work for you, then you should build the driver from source.

Hi buddy

I tried the link you kindly provided (in my other thread) and installed the package using installpkg (or was it pkginstall??).

It "worked" in the sense of it was detected and loaded by Xserver however, it was painfully slow. For example, clicking between windows (to raise focus) took about 2seconds (composite on); moving windows left a "drag trail" over the screen; moving the cursor of the menu bar and toolbar menus was slow.

The stock vesa driver is much much moer responsive.

How can this be? Is there anything I can do?

In terms of compiling the source ... whaaaa! That would be new territory to me. If you could provide instructions then I would be most obliged. I am familiar with package manipulation, make, configure etc. but would not know depedencies, locations of depedency packages, order of compliation, configure options and make options for the openchrome source compile.

Is there a HOWTO ? Sounds like a good post to the forum if you have the time and desire , please m pretty please.

Thanks .

there may be something missing from the package.

compiling a driver is easy, all that is needed is the Xorg headers which are installed.
i downloaded the driver and did "./configure --prefix=/usr" then "make" then "make install"
