I'm an ubuntu emigrant. Tried Mint, Mandriva, Fedora, SuSE, you name it. All the big ones over the last 5 years.

Well you guys at VL. Have I ever seen such a gorgeous distro, with SPEEEED. woosh. My 4yr old PC has been reborn.

This VL is brilliant (or "beeze-knees" at we call it in London)

Ok, question

When I installed, X did not work. The "via" driver had been selected. My chip is an integrated VGA, from lspci command:
Code:
VGA compatible controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. K8M890 [Chrome9] Integrated Video (rev 11)

I had to put the driver back to "vesa" for this to work.

On ubuntu I got this working using the openchrome drivers from an ubuntu site (the synaptic version didnt work). Had to compile myself. Is there something on VL that will work with this chip?

thanks, and where have you been all my life :-)

hello keratos,

Welcome to VL.
what version did you install?
If you installed one of the 32bit 5.9 variants you can get the openchrome driver here: http://vectorlinux.osuosl.org/Uelsk8s/xf86-video-openchrome-0.2.901-i586-1vl59.tlz

let us know how it works for you,

Welcome keratos, very nice to hear your first experience. Yes this really is excellent one, even our office uses this on internet machine, and 5.9 has superb look and feel.

Hey guys. Thanks for the feedback.

I installed an ISO from SoftPedia. Not sure what it is other than 5.9 "Gold Std". Huh The VL site was down, some message about it "being hacked beyond repair"

It works on my AMDx64 , and very beautifully fast,  may I add.

I think this is an i486 build. Is there a "better" one form AMDx64

??
thanks

STRANGE!!

I installed OpenChrome as suggested (link) and the system is PAINFULLY slow. Like clicking between windows took about 1 to 2 seconds to raise the window. !!! huh?

Set card driver to "vesa" in xorg.conf, restarted X and voila! back to astounding speed.

How come the vesa dedicated driver is much much much faster than the openchrome driver?

The build you have is i586 architecture, optimized for i686.  Is there a better one for your 64-bit machine?  Yes, absolutely, but it's still in beta.  The good news is that so far it's a very clean beta and it works well for me.  The main issue is that there aren't a lot of native 64-bit packages for VL yet but that is gradually being taken care of.

Yep. I too have AMD64 and do a lot of NLE video stuff so should be useful, when the stability is sorted out. Like your good self, I wouldnt use an alpha to sleep on - just not yet.  Cheesy
