I installed the live 5.9 CD to the hard drive, and then installed kde base. Three very nice improvements took place:
1) VL boots faster. The little lilo dots whiz by.
2) The log on box is totally different, it's now bigger and its layout has totally changed for the better.
3) Before the log on screen comes up there is another very nive blue screen with swirl design.
In the final analysis, there were some unpleasant attributes to this experiment such that KDE Base and Amarok are now un-installed. The system is again the original VL 5.9 std.
