I know a number of you work at technology recycling, or at least know people who do.

Anyone familiar with Free Geek? I ask as a local outfit that's affiliated with them has cropped up and, by the looks of things, they're working along the same lines

Need to see when I can get reliable transportation, but it definitely looks like a worthwhile way to spend spare time.

yes, Free Geek is a very noble concern and a great way to recycle computers. The small charity I work for does similar except just two of us do all the technical refurbishing, loading Linux etc and then the machines are donated to jobseekers, low income earners, new immigrants, students, single mothers and the disabled. So we don't actually give away computers to volunteers who help us as we want to keep our operation small and just do it out of our garages. We do also sell these computers for very minimal donations of $20-$40 for those who can afford it - those donations offset our minimal costs of running the operation.

Well given my own collection of unused components It'll both be a donation and volunteering to sort and catalog things. I figure I might's well spend some time to do stuff that I like doing anyway, and put some old machines back to work.

My problem here is the transport I've had old machines and fixed them up and still use some but living where I do there is no easy way to ship them without great expense.

Currently, due to lack of enough volunteers, we are only open the second
Saturday of every month from 10-12. The next date will be May 10th.

Our physical address is 521 Old Salem Hwy 37129 and our section of the
building faces Park Avenue.

We are an affiliate of Free Geek, but we do not have a thrift store due to
lack of location for one and volunteers. However, we do use the computer
adoption program and if someone comes to help us out, we will gladly offer
a free computer in return for services.

Seems they lack volunteers. This is something I shall have to help change.

Hello!

Those hours apply to drop-offs and to volunteering as well. Second
Saturday of every month from 10-12.

We are hoping to be open more days and hours as more volunteers become
available, but for now, that is the only day every month we are open.

Definitely going to need to try and generate community interest here.

edit: What disturbs me is that they can only apparently get enough volunteers to do anything once a month and even then only for two hours. thsi says not-good-things about my community.
