hi,
i use soho 5.8 with kde 3.5.6...btw a great distri..thanks

i wanted to assign  a stick in fstab to a certain mountpoint...

so how can i rename the stick on my desktop, so my mother has a familiar name instead of  sdb-vol1.....
is it even possible to assign a stick in vl?

my line in fstab
/dev/disk/by-uuid/47D7-CF99   /mnt/vl-hot/sdb/vol1 auto defaults 0 0
didnt work

so i tried..
/dev/disk/by-uuid/47D7-CF99   /mnt/vl-hot/stick_guenter   auto defaults 0 0

but to no avail

greets günter

Sorry I do not know myself...but a rose by anyother name would smell as sweet...I'm curious why it is required

it is required, so my mothers stick appears always under the same name in the system....usually linux asign the usb-path regarding their channels inside...e.g sda...sdb...sdc...sde....

so my mother can always reach her stick under the same name (in konqueror.../mnt/vl-hot/..there it depends...)

I wonder if a custom udev rule can be made?  If it matches the vendor and model of her stick, it could single hers out, and create a custom name for it.

Buuut.....   I can't tell you exactly how to go about it.  udev makes my brain hurt.

I would add a RUN+="mount..." statement to the udev rule to automount the device, and you have to be sure the rule match your device before than the vl-hot rules. Also keep in mind that using your custom udev rule will make you lose the desktop icon generated by vl-hot for your mom Smiley. May be the best is find the way to tweak vl-hot...
