This is exactly the reason why I feel it is my responsibility as a passenger to keep paying attention. I've been a passenger with really sleepy people twice, once on the way back from a party and once on the way home from a 24 hour day of work in Belgium. I was sleepy myself too, and I don't have a driving license so I couldn't drive either. It was very scary and uncomfortable, these were the scariest 400 or so km's of my life.
