bar at bottom of screen (solved)
« on: May 08, 2008, 11:46:27 pm »

My bookkeeper uses standard 5.8.  Today she called me in and said her screen was frozen.  I checked it and agreed.  Could not get to Htop.  I did a cntrl-alt-backspace.  Machine would then accept some limited commands.  I did a "log out" and that worked.  Put in her username and password, and that worked too, but when screen painted, it did not have the little bar at the bottom where you click on programs etc.

Rebooted a couple of times.  Same problem.  She can still get to wvfi-connect by right-clicking and to the other programs with alt-F2.

Anyone have a clue how to get the bar back?

sledgehammer,

I assume your bookkeeper is using Xfce as the desktop environment.  In Xfce the bar across the bottom is called a "panel" (you can have more than one, but in Vector Linux Standard 5.8 Xfce has a default of only one.  In your case the panel disappeared - in other words it crashed for some unknown reason.  To restart the panel, you should be able to type Alt-F2, then type "xfce4-panel," then hit the "Enter" key or click the "Run" button.  To ensure that the panel appears the next time you log out/log in or restart the machine, make sure that when you log out or turn off the machine, the box next to "Save session for future logins" is unchecked, so that it looks like this:

I hope this helps.
