a second newbie question: usb wifi stick

hello, i got vectorlinux up and running, thanx to some support already,

but here is the hardest part for me.
setting up a sweex usb key: chipset rt2571wf

i have found a driver but then they say it is not the good one. there seem to be a few rt25XX drivers on the net. but not that good for the 2571.

can anyone help me out on this ?

i also read about ndiswrapper. and then install the windows driver.
but for a new one, it is not that simple, i have red tutorials about it, still
i'm not getting there.

if the ndiswrapper is the best way to go, i will certainly do it. instead of trying a lot of different drivers that might not work.

so the brand is sweex, the model is rt2571wf ralink.

It took some time to find decent information on this
hardware. Sweetex site was really no help at all.

This chipset appears to be included in the kernel.

So all you should have to do is modprobe rt73usb.

the only thing is that i can't find that rt73usb file ?
do i have to download it ? and if so, do i have to put it somewhere specific ?


me myself i was looking, and on ralink (the manufactur you can find the driver and some info)

so i downloaded it, and was doing everything they say in the readme file. but like always
it goes much to fast : they say: load the driver, but as a newby : how do you have to load a driver ?
so there i was stuck. 

but if your option works that is super.
still i'm stuck again on the rt73usb file.

did you try run this command as root?

modprobe rt73usb

pls post your lsmod output to us.....

FATAL: Module rt73usb not found

that's what i get for "the computer"

as root do this command to see if you have the module:
modprobe -l | grep "rt73*" <----- that's a hyphen and a lowercase "L"
On my machine it yields:
/lib/modules/2.6.24.3/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt73usb.ko

fillemon, for whatever reason your needed module is not in that kernel.  Our modprobe -l proved that. You can update your kernel again, to a kernel that does have the module. I can only confirm the 2.6.24.3 at the moment. You've installed a ck kernel so I'm sure you can handle it.  If you aren't willing to part with the ck kernel, you can always run multiple kernels to try them out.

I would be interested in the output of:
lsusb -v
and just:
lsusb
But please only the section related to your stick.  With that we can nail down exactly the chipset of the card.
It's not that I feel you have provided incorrect information.  I've found too often what's on the box isn't exactly what's in the innards of the hardware.  I'd be happy to attempt some legwork for you, but want to make sure I'm searching for the correct thing.

well i have no problem giving up a ck kernel for my wifi. funtionality goes way beyond speed.
cause working on a linux system only makes sense to me, if i can use my wifi.

so the first thing i will do is install the newest kernel, ( i suppose that's the one you displayed).

for the ouput

if i type lsusb - v, i get a lot info; 

well the type is rt2573wf, i'm quite sure, and you know why ? cause i opened the usb key to check the chipset.
finding it for windows was also very very hard, on the manufactur website it was not working, so i openend it
and saw that it was a ralink. and from there things went good.

so i'm gonna try to install the 2.6.24.3 kernel.
untill then, keep those legs at rest

well i'm running the 2.6.24.3 kernel,
if i do a modprobe i get
fatal: could not load /lib/modules/2.6.24.3/modules.dep

that's it so far.
