I'm trying to install HelixPlayer and RealPlayer, so that I can listen to BBC Radio.

I've downloaded HelixPlayer-11.0.0.4052-20080318.i586.rpm & RealPlayer11GOLD.rpm

When I run the command:

rpm -ivh HelixPlayer-11.0.0.4052-20080318.i586.rpm , as root, as instructed by this site, I get the error message:

error: failed dependencies:
         lsb >= 3.1 is needed by HelixPlayer-11.0.0.4052-20080318.i586.rpm
         /bin/sh is needed by HelixPlayer-11.0.0.4052-20080318.i586.rpm

I get the same error message if I run the command on RealPlayer11GOLD.rpm

What should I do next?  Go gently with this Vectorbie! Undecided

I would of tried the "bin" installer method. I stay away from rpm's if possible.  I was surprised to see they have a source download as well.  Don't know about packaging it with licenses and all.

I tried the bin installer method, but couldn't get the bin file executable using the command given.

Via command line try:
chmod +x nameOfBinFile

You need to be the owner of the file.  So make sure you do the command with the same user that downloaded the file. Other then that, I can't imagine why you wouldn't be able to make it executable. I did download the sources yesterday, and quickly tried to compile it to see how hard it would be to make a package.  The makefile will need some adjusting since it failed right away.  Maybe I'll be able to goof around with it today, and get a package built for the repo.

That would be fantastic.  Thanks for the help so far.

You can also do command "sh <name_of_file>". If you want it installed globally, do this as root.

Just to let you know.  I investigated what it would take to package from source.  I think I won't be attempting this Sad
There are no build directions, and I was having to make edit, after edit to makefiles.

I did find several rpm spec files that I could get build directions from. But they contained endless patches, and endless lines of "voodo magic". Porting this to VL isn't something I should attempt as I am not familiar with the player and I could easily bork the porting not knowing what the heck is going on.

I did find slackbuild in a directory on a ftp server using Google.  The site kept timing out, but was able to read the directory. It appears to make use of a rpm.  I couldn't check out the slackbuild though, the site couldn't be reached anymore.

I tried this, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.  If I try and run it, I get an Open With dialog box, asking me what to open this file with, so I reckon it's because it's not executable.

You can also do command "sh <name_of_file>". If you want it installed globally, do this as root.

I tried this too, but when I do:

sh hxplay-11.0.0.4052-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin

I get:

hxplay-11.0.0.4052-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin: hxplay-11.0.0.4052-linux-2.2-libc6-gcc32-i586.bin: cannot execute binary file

I know what's going on!  When using the command line to execute something.  If you are in the same directory as the file you need a dot and a slash before the filename:
./nameOfBin

Yeah, that's what you need here, and you gotta be root.

chmod +x RealPlayer11GOLD.bin
./RealPlayer11Gold.bin

That starts the installation. I halted it because I don't want it on my system, but you should be able to take it from there.

Thank you, nightflier and exeterdad!

RealPlayer is now up-and-running!  It's great that I now have the same functionality as I had on Windoze, in terms of listening to internet radio etc.

Thanks for the help and advice.
