I think I can confirm the lxpanel problem is caused by the soundcard. I did an install in VirtualBox, disabled the sound and lxpanel wont start.

In other words; if there is no sound card, and the volume control applet is active, the panel won't load.

If that's the case I'm thinking we should not include the volume control in default config, unless we can find a bug fix or workaround.

.. related to the error above, but alsa was not able to find my sound card during installation.

It may be related to the volume control applet then. If you can bring up the panel using the terminal, right-click it, and remove the volume control and netmonitor applets. Log out and back in and see.

Trivia: if you type "lxpanel &", it should stick even if you close the terminal window. Of course it is a band-aid approach but useful for troubleshooting.

@ M0E-lnx: This is the first report of panel consistently not loading, but there have been sporadic instances in the past. I am experimenting with the new packages, but there are big changes and issues I have not figured out yet.

I guess I forgot to mention that the syntax of the config file has changed significantly. With that said, you should remove the old packages completely
and make sure there are no leftovers of the old ones before installing the new packages.

i found my first bug on this one:

i fisrts logged in,set my internet and then rebooted. After that at KDM when i try to log in (by defaulkt in lxde) the screen blinks and im thrown out again at kdm. Only way to get back in is to loging with jwm or fluxbox.

Is there a log file somewhere...

found this in /home/killy/.config/lxsession/LXDE
Code:
remove protoname=ICE protodata="" netid=inet/vector.linux.net:42262 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=XSMP protodata="" netid=inet/vector.linux.net:42262 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=ICE protodata="" netid=local/vector.linux.net:/tmp/.ICE-unix/3490 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
remove protoname=XSMP protodata="" netid=local/vector.linux.net:/tmp/.ICE-unix/3490 authname=MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1
my best guess is that like xfce, changing the dns causes some fuss..maybe after i edit /etc/hosts...

EDIT: i fixed the bug that prevents any users from logging in with LXDE by editing /etc/hosts, where i found two useless lines with my static ip adress and a line with 127.0.0.1.

to fix it i added the following one line:
Code:
127.0.0.1 vector.linux.net
I think that this bug is really an annoyance and to some former ubuntu users who are trying vector would look like a serious problem to figure out whats happening with their lxde

I have a recently set up Hotmail account that apparently comes with Windows Live software. Opera won't open this one Hotmail account. The Hotmail interface finally gave me an error message that I need to allow cookies on the browser, specifying IE and Firefox, but not Opera. I checked the cookies setting in Opera, and cookies are allowed unconditionally.

Opera fonts still leave something to be desired, as some letters contact adjacent letters ("c" "d" "g" in particular).

Opera fonts are unusually small in places. Inconsistent sizes.

There is no "Show Desktop" icon on the panel in LXDE. I consider this little toggle essential to managing windows.

A youtube video caused CPU usage to go to near 95%. A problem with multitasking maybe? A youtube video that can be played onsite at a channel does not show an image, is completely gray and non-functional. I visited a youtube video from youtube Favorites and I get an error about Adobe Flash Player not being right. I close the error message and video plays mostly okay, some skipping, especially when another window is operant (multitasking).

DVD played okay in Xine, and CD played okay in XMMS using Play Location: /mnt/cdrom

The scroll lag I am seeing in Opera is a bit disappointing, as I have installed VL Light on a P4 / 2.0 GHz computer.

Suggestion: dump Opera, use Seamonkey instead. I read a recent review of mini distros that included Zenwalk with DSL, TinyMe, Puppy, etc. How large is ZW iso, 470 MB? DSL and Puppy have less than 100 MB iso, yet they manage to use a Mozilla browser. SliTaz, with 25 MB iso, uses Bon Echo (Firefox?).

no such lags here...but when i enable the testing repo in gslapt,i can't install many things because of conflicting package version (some packages even want x11 7.3 and even qt: Depends: mysql >= 5.0.51-i586-3vl59 (on any kde-gui apps )...

During the installation:
- typo: "/tmp may bost"
- usab: when you choose, how many groups will be user in, the last one doesn't fit in the "window". Better expand it
- error: convert.sh was not found after installing all packages
- error: network card (nvidia integrated, forcedeth module) was not found, though later it was configured by vasm fine
- cosmetic: before X configuration a screen of "grep --help" output appears
- error: after reboot and ending pre-start configuration an error about absence of convert.sh is shown again

Usability:
- usab: you can't start ssh by just using /usr/sbin/sshd or vasm. You need to generate rsa/dsa keys using ssh-keygen. Why not generate them automatically with empty passphrases?
- error: can't scp from Light machine:
Code:
gateway:$ scp vanger@192.168.111.3://home/vanger/* .
vanger@192.168.111.3's password:
You are working as vanger
falloutgw:/~
vanger:$ xmodmap:  unable to open display ''
is shown. Seen that on previous Light versions. Still can't beat it.

Oh, well, quickly started, quickly booted, quickly gone...

-usab: default lilo.conf should have "lba32" option in it, cause without it Windows won't start
-error: if you choose logout in Fluxbox, you'll be thrown in a screen of colorful text rubbish, with no way out except of reboot
-SHOWSTOPPER: after installing latest nVidia 173 drivers (they compiled nicely) X froze at start (blank dark screen). After reboot it was found, that:
a) X will act the same after reboot
b) X won't work if you edit xorg.conf in TUI mode back to "nv" drivers
c) Kernel for linux-tui is 2.6.22.19
d) modprobe modules returns error, though all modules are in place
e) lsmod shows empty list
f) in dmesg there is bunch of errors regarding failure to INSERT different modules

Reporting from Windows, sincerelly yours, Pita Qa.

Added P.S.:
Specs: A64 2800+ / 1.5Gb RAM / 6100 onboard, 8600GT PCI-Ex
Also, tried to write iso on DVD+RW, it burned succesfully, but failed to boot from it. Showed "ISOLINUX" string and then reported about errors. Did anyone try this?
