I have been struggling with the kernel and even more frustrated by the glowing reports above! Then two days ago my NEW laptop crashed (couldn't get into VL, Vista, or a live CD)!! Thus I suspect that it's not the kernel but the machine so I'll have to wait for a week or so until the new NEW one arrives before I can report back.

Life is so exciting isn't it. Tongue

Everything is perfect, except nVidia driver. I've updated to the newest vlnvidia, but module compiling failed.

Probable because you need the kernel source installed for that specific kernel or the nVidia driver will not compile.

@lagagnon

2.6.25.7 kernel source package is installed. I think that 2.6.25.x kernel require newer nVidia driver - 17x.xx or something. Thanks anyway! Wink

I attached nvidia installer log file.

Line 83 offers a fix.
Quote
Run 'make oldconfig && make prepare' on kernel src to fix it
Try entering the sources as root and running :

make oldconfig && make prepare

Nope, same thing. Same "solution" was for 2.6.24.3 kernel, so I had to wait uelsk8s to build new vlnvidia package. Thanks for your effort.

Is there a howto on installing these kernels somewhere or can someone post simple procedure steps?..
I was trying to install one of these kernels and ended up with an unbootable system.

here is what I did
1) Download / install kernel, kernel-modules
2) run vliloconf (correctly identified new kernel and listed it on the menu)
3) reboot

I got a kernel panic while booting the new kernel.
Where did I go wrong?

kernel panics are ofen caused by incompatible, obsolete, or corrupted kernel extensions and or drivers, although they can be caused by faulty ram. but your previous kernel obviously worked.

as uelsk8s posted in another thread
I downloaded the kernel and modules(2.6.22.19, 2.6.25.7, 2.6.26.6) to the home directory

then in terminal- su to root, enter password then

installpkg /home/name/kernel-2.6.xx.x-ix86-1vl59.tlz

installpkg /home/name/kernel-modules-2.6.xx.x-ix86-1vl5.9.tlz

vliloconf
dialog ask mbr, in my case yes, click through, I turn off the boot splash

back to root
close terminal
reboot and choose kernel of choice

I added these to 5.9 std and 5.9 light with no issue installing or booting
with the exception of the novmsplice patch I had added to default 2.6.22.14 in std which had to be commented out of the etc/rc.d/modules (thanks to caitlyn) or I got a modules failed during boot

the 2.26.22.19 kernel is included in light I think

during my regular use I have not had issue

I have yet to  network boxs together in linux and use my faxline for dialup. I have not compiled drivers or modules yet so this is likely of little value.

if you can boot the old kernel perhaps var/log/boot.log can shed light

my limited attempt to assist
cheers

Thanks for the reply.
I managed to do it in VL LIght bug I got the red [FAILED] wen loading modules... already tried running depmod -aq but didn't fix it. Didn't pay much attention to it, I just went to my old kernel.

But now I know... I'm interested in new kernels looking for native support for my broadcom 4318

the red [FAILED] wen loading modules is most likely from the novmsplice kernel module not being able to load.

Just tried the 2.6.26.7 kernel, and when trying to compile the nvidia driver (in vxconf), I get "unable to compile module".
Any ideas?

Thank you!

you may need a newer version of the nvidia drivers.
You can take the ones from 6.0 if you have an ISO handy
