VL Lite Auto Login (I know this has been covered, but...)

I tried the solution in this post;

Only to end up needing to enter the username, password, and then ending up in runlevel 3 instead of 5. I also lost the pretty login screen (kdm?) that was there prior to me messing with the kdmrc file. Anyone know what I may have done to mess this up and what I can do to fix it?

I'm pretty sure this is a PEBKAC, I'm a bit of a newb with linux.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter, but just in case; I've also been having weirdness when logging in sometimes, the desktop is solid blue until I go to <rclick >> Home>, at which point it restores itself. It doesn't always do this, and I haven't found the pattern to it yet. Also, it's an old K6 frankenbox that was laying around, so I'm not even completely sure what kind of hardware there is, no modem, no sound, there is a network card. I loaded VL Lite 5.9 Beta 5 on it (after trying a couple of other distros that I didn't like). All I really want this box to do is boot up and be ready to get onto the internet, with a few apps available just in case they're needed. If you've read all of my wonderful rambling, thanks, any reply would be helpful, even a "WTH did you do?" from someone with more experience than me would be comforting.

If you lost the KDM login screen, you also lost the auto-login feature.
You may want to try running  vasm > filesystem > LILO .. and select the graphichal user interface login, see if it helps.

I just tried that, no go. I also tried using gslapt to 'downgrade' the kdm package then reinstall it, still nothing. Seems like there's something preventing kdm from working.

Next step: wipe out current install (nothing important has been done on that machine yet), install VL Light RC1, then I'll try to get auto login to work on that. I'll post my results here even if I have no issues getting it to work.

Wiped the install, put on VL Light RC1 and I still don't have kdm. Is there a way to get kdm back? On b5 I tried to remove the package and then put it back in, that wasn't what I needed I'm sure. Is there an easy way to replace kdm with something else and acheive an automated login?

Not sure what's going on here. Autologin capability is one reason why KDM was chosen for Light. You did not un-check any optional packages during install?

I did the full install, not sure what happened. I'll try again on tuesday, I won't have access to the machine till then.

I installed Vector on a spare hard disk on my home box. I'm pretty sure that I just figured out what I did. Out of habit, when I created my user I added a password. When I made the user on my home install I didn't add a password. Auto Login worked fine then. So yeah, total PEBKAC.

Sidenote; Vector Light is FAST on a newer PC, quite impressive.

Okay, so it wasn't just me. I'm not sure what it is still, but this computer won't do autologin even from a fresh install. I've been able to get it to work from two different Vector installs on my home machine (VL Light 5.9 rc1 and VL Standard 5.9), but for some reason beyond my understanding, this machine won't do it with VL Light. I've given up on it, just figured I'd give anyone interested an update.
