Installation Leaves Me with 99s! - SOLVED
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:23:42 pm »

I tried installing 5.9 Standard GOLD instead of 5.8.

This didn't work, probably because of a disk error.

I tried reinstalling 5,8, but now get half a screen full of 99s!

99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99
99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 ...

Any ideas? :-\

This is most likely a bad bootloader write

You can boot your install using the isntall CD

put in in the drive, when the splash screen comes up, type this
Code: [Select]
linux root=/dev/hdxx ro replace "/dev/hdxx" with the / partition to your 5.8 install

after it boots, run vliloconf in a terminal as root

That is a LILO error (Linux Loader):
"L99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 :: Lilo is unable to locate the second stage bootloader.
This error may occur, if the hard drive is in normal mode, but lilo has written the boot record using LBA logical block addressing mode. Switching the BIOS hard drive parameters to LBA logical block addressing allows the bootloader to start normally, but the system may not start properly, because the partitions cannot be located due to geometry differences."

In other words, your BIOS is set up incorrectly for your hard drive. Enter your BIOS (usually by pressing DEL or F2 on bootup) and do what it says above. Either that or you incorrectly partitioned your hard drive.

Actually the installation Cd has an option to redo your lilo. You can try that as well. No need for me to repeat what the others said, your lilo (mbr, master boot record) is corrupted, and needs to be written again.

Thanks for all those replies.

I'll try out what you're suggesting when I get back to that machine next week. :)
