you can play a DVD in text mode like this!

make a script named playtxtvdvd as follows

Code:
#!/bin/sh
export CACA_DRIVER=X11
#"slang" or "ncurses" withouth quotes if you are REALLY in text mode. yeah it works there too!!
export CACA_FONT=5x7
#other options you could try are "fixed" or other XxY formats without quotes
export CACA_GEOMETRY=200x90
#any XxY format that looks good. lower resotution is better for old pc or try -vo aa:WIDTH=X:HEIGHT=Y for black and white no color
mplayer -quiet -vo caca -alang en -framedrop dvd://
#you can change -alang to your two letter language like fr or sp or pt only available options will work though (I think)
#dvd:// can  be changed to the path on any video mplayer will play
#you probably need -framedrop
then

chmod x+ ./playtxtdvd
./playtxtdvd

here is what it looks like : http://webpages.uncc.edu/~carayfie/myvector.jpg

not bad for my first post here huh....

Cool!!

For those who like this kinda thing, I suggest playing around with aaxine from the command line. It comes on a default install of VL.

Hi all,

I'm new to doing things in the cli.  I'm also relatively new to the world of Linux

When I tried doing the script file thingie for playing dvd's from the cli I ran into this :
sknight75:$ ./playtxtdvd
MPlayer 1.0rc1-3.4.6 (C) 2000-2006 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) M processor 1.50GHz (Family: 6, Model: 13, Stepping: 6)
CPUflags:  MMX: 1 MMX2: 1 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 1
Compiled with runtime CPU detection.

Playing dvd://.
libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.9 for DVD access
libdvdread: Can't stat /dev/dvd
No such file or directory
Couldn't open DVD device: /dev/dvd
[file] No filename
Failed to open dvd://.

Exiting... (End of file)

My testing DVD is the Dead or Alive movie

When I open the folder that contains the device icons, I don't have a dvd://   I do have a CD-ROM(sr0)  tho  not sure how to enable the dvd as a device as of yet.

Any help appreciated.

I'm running Vector SOHO 5.8 Final on an IBM Thinkpad R51 1829 KCF, 1GB Ram, Centrino 1.5GHz

My personal updated version, asks for input.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
file2play=""
echo "Enter the directory of the file: "
read file2play
export CACA_DRIVER=X11
#"slang" or "ncurses" withouth quotes if you are REALLY in text mode. yeah it works there too!!
export CACA_FONT=5x7
#other options you could try are "fixed" or other XxY formats without quotes
export CACA_GEOMETRY=200x90
#any XxY format that looks good. lower resotution is better for old pc or try -vo aa:WIDTH=X:HEIGHT=Y for black and white no color
mplayer -quiet -vo caca -alang en -framedrop $file2play
#you can change -alang to your two letter language like fr or sp or pt only available options will work though (I think)
#dvd:// can  be changed to the path on any video mplayer will play
#you probably need -framedrop

Might work, might not work.

(MY FIRST BASH PROGRAM EVER!!! WOOOOT!...except I didn't make it, I edited it..that's fine though Grin)
