I would really like to get LXDE to work on my computer. I have downloaded lxde-common-0.3.2.1> lxpanel-0.3.8.1> lxsession-0.3.2> I have run ./configure>make>su Make install> on panel and session... I don't know if I have lxde_common installed correctly... I have no taskbar and crazy, disappearing, and unruly icons on the desktop! Any help would be much appreciated thanks!

Use vpackager. Build from Ports search for LXDE click each package name and hit CTRL+M to edit the build script update the version numbers to match withever you are trying to install
it should automate the process for you
There are several components, you'll need to update the version number to each one of them
lxde-common lxappearance lxpanel lxsession-lite lxnm lxtask
You'll also need Openbox obconf pcmanfm
Optional hal

Hi, maybe I don't see the whole iceberg, but why should you compile lxde? Couldn't you just install it via slapt-get, as I did on my VL5.9 Standsrd?

Thank you, M0E, now I see the whole picture. BTW, does VL5.9 Light RC2 has the latest lxde version? Thanks in advance.

No.. Even the final light version has the old version of LXDE, this is because LXDE developers move real fast... and during the testing phase of vl-light, they made quite a few releases. VL Light had to freeze at some point to get bugs tracked and worked out... so it shipped with the old version. There have been many improvements to the lxde project, but these are only available via the ports system.

Thanks for your helpful replies! I realized, when working on this, that I had not downloaded and installed VL-5.9-Light final iso. I was still using beta 3. Wow! I LOVE this version! Getting a dial up connection working was much easier...GTKfind...a great addition...LXDE included...I have just started exploring, so please excuse me, I must go play with my new toy!! Thanks Again

Yep, VL Light Final is nice It's usually customary to add [solved] to the topic when it's solved for you. FWIW, I also want the newest LXDE. Time is in short supply but I hope to have a chance to build regular VL 5.9 packages for a newer version so that folks who want to try the latest out of the testing repositiory rather than compiling their own should be able to.

Great! Thanks. I've tried it once from the repos and have been somewhat discouraged by some bugs. I'll definitely check the latest version.
