Author Topic: Xorg problems with vector 5.9 light on compaq presario p3  (Read 1458 times)

I have a compaq presario 5000(p3 800mhz, 64mb ram) that I installed 5.9 light on.

lspci says i have an 82810E chipset graphics controller. The installer set my xorg.conf to use the i810 driver.

First reboot after install when going into graphical mode got a bunch of squiggly wiggles.

So I rebooted using the linux-tui and edited my xorg.conf. Actually I just replaced it with the vesa one provided
in the /etc/X11 directory.

Now startx just gives me a black screen.

That old i810 driver had some probs IIRC. Boot into linux-tui from the lilo boot screen, login as root, edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change the line:

Driver "i810"

Driver "vesa"

that should work. If that does not work change the line

DefaultDepth 24

DefaultDepth 16

I was having similar problems with this release on a similar video chip.

Try booting into CLI mode and log in with your use name and password.
there at the termina.

If the GUI loads, then you have the same problem I did, which is  a broken KDM package.

If that works, simply su to root, then slapt-get -i kdm-small
Reboot, and you should have your GUI back.

PS. IF startx doesn't load the GUI, then you have a different problem.

Thanks for the reply,

The system in question won't even post now. No video output.
I'm not sure but I suspect that maybe it was the motherboard all along.

Since the onboard video was previously working in Win98 I thought it must be an xorg
problem. Nope just a crappy motherboard. hehe.

I've got 5.9 light running on another p3 800 128mb ram and its really, really nice.
